Having worked in a prison I looked at this list and realized the only one on it that I have seen was Papillon which I saw when I was somewhere between age 12 and 14.
I remember it being quite good but I wouldn't have the guts to watch such a movie now. I just don't dig the violence anymore.

I guess you didn't see that episode of Mad About You when the main female character's mother made the comment about seeing Harvey Keitel's wiener.

First one is Elizabeth Bowen and the second by George Orwell.
I would say you could enjoy
Howard's End, Return of the Solider, Heat of the Day, Mrs. Dalloway and Keep the Aspidistra Flying .
All right up your alley I would think on the latter end of the time period.
