I relate, L. Bangs. In fact, I may make a list of my own to that effect.

A Film (or two) for Every State

No, the review claims that the film was shot in Delaware, not that the story took place in Delaware. All my sources (including the online TV Guide film database) claim the story is actually set in Vermont.

Great Films By Stanley Kubrick

Another great list, Mr. Black. I am a bit surprised to see Full Metal Jacket on a list lacking Paths of Glory or The Killing, but FMJ is rather good.

You really should see Barry Lyndon, especially once it is released remastered later this summer (the present DVD is rather poor). I'm sure it will join the others on this list.

0012. Over-Rated Artists

This is a difficult list to assess. Most of the artists on it have indeed made some fantastic albums, and yet many of the careers that followed are indeed greatly over-rated. Dave Matthews and Smashing Pumpkins are givens, of course, but what to do with The Grateful Dead and Pink Floyd, who have their fair share of great albums and more than their fair share of terrible albums?

So I suppose I really only disagree on Led Zeppelin.

I really enjoyed your poems, which seemed like anything but the work of a young girl. I notice others have said this, but you really should write professionally. Have you ever published any poetry or criticism?

Even when our opinions differ, I love the way you express them.

Eleven Best Films Of The 1970's

"Over The Edge would be higher, but the ten in front of it are better."

In the spirit of friendly exchange of ideas, I'll simply say that we completely agree on the last half of your sentence.

Still, a very good list.

5 Best Movies with Dennis Hopper in them.

It is a very good film, and Hopper is used particularly appropriately in it (his character could almost be Easy Rider's Billy later in life, and the contrast between one generation's rebellious youth and another's uncaring one is quite effective). I don't consider it a masterpiece, but it is quite good, and it definitely holds an unique position in the genre of teen films.

The Best Altman Films

I admire your list greatly. Yes, I am a M*A*S*H fan, and I would have placed it after your top two, which are also my own two favorite Altman films.

I must admit, I like Cookie's Fortune and Kansas City, but there are other Altman works I enjoy even more. Tanner '88 was made for HBO, but I would probably rank it number five after your top two, M*A*S*H, and McCabe and Mrs. Miller. Have you had the chance to see Tanner?

Vincent and Theo is also a quite good film.

Very good. I'm looking forward to reading your other lists.

0023: The 100 Best Rock Albums (10-1)

I'm very impressed. Your writing and knowledge are top-notch, and for the most part, your selections are rather apt.

I do believe you placed Aretha Franklin a bit too high, and I do disagree with your comments about Led Zeppelin (although I was glad to see you include IV on your list and to give the under-rated "When the Levee Breaks," the attention it deserves).

I also would have had to include either Tumbleweed Connection or, more probably, Honky Chateau on the list.

Despite these minor differences, we do have an amazing amount in common, including our love of Elvis Costello, Sonic Youth, and Bob Dylan. I suppose I'll have to investigate Adam Again and Mark Heard now.

Really, this list is extremely excellent. You should be proud.

Eleven Best Films Of The 1970's

Over the Edge? The Matt Dillon film? It is a fairly good film (with a soundtrack by the Ramones!) but I couldn't really put it on a list with such esteemed company.

The Man Who Fell to Earth and Dog Day Afternoon also seem a bit out of place, but just a bit.

I do greatly miss The Conversation, Network, Jaws, Five Easy Pieces, Manhattan, Badlands, and The French Connection, among others. Of course, these would make this a rather unwieldy top ten list, wouldn't they?.

Thought-provoking.

5 Best Movies with Dennis Hopper in them.

I personally could never put Easy Rider, much less Hoosiers or River's Edge, over Rebel Without a Cause. I also treasure Gunfight at the O.K. Corral, which Mr. Hopper has a role in.

Good list, all the same.
