Yes, I enjoyed Mark Haddon's book very much. Liked reading about the quirky teenage character with autism. Very original story, I think this book has won an award in England, the Whitbread??
The Little Friend is a little wordy, with a not to believeable storyline. I'm about half through now and will keep reading, hoping it will get better. Book magazine raved about it too, rating it one of the top ten novels of 2002.
I agree for the most part. John Irving and Ken Follett come to mind. Their early books were fantastic. But their later efforts leave a lot to be desired. Some writers however seems to get better with age. Ann Patchett for example. Her lastest book Bel Canto - much better than earlier works.
Oh, I forgot....I've started Middlesex and I'm enjoying it immensely.
Here's what BookMagazine says about Middlesex:
Eugenides' novel sweeps the reader up in the epic coming of age tale of a Greco-American heraphrodite.
Here's what they say about The Crimson Petal...:
This Victorian epic is without a doubt the filthiest mainstream book of the year, and it's also one of the most entertaining.
I've read Atonement which I would rate as 10/10. Very well written and beautifully rendered. The characters and the story stay with you for a long time. I've also read The Lovely Bones and really didn't see what all the hipe was about, but a lot a my friends, both on and off-line raved about it. I have Life of Pi and The Crimson Petal and the White here to read and my on-line book club loved both of these.
I'm addicted to buying books. Just loooove going to the book store and browsing for a couple of hours.
I'm only half done with this list and I want to go right now and buy more.
Holding firm and appling self control,
Poppie

You're my reading twin! Love all the books on your list too.
Really loved Life of Pi. This book won the Booker Prize for 2002. Very inspiring book for the first read of the new year.

My on-line book club loved The Little Friend. Have you read The Secret History by the same author? Now that was a very good read.

The book was laugh-out-loud funny and sad too. It's one of my all time favorite.
Have you read "Atonement" by Ian McEwan. I highly recommend it.
I listened to A Walk To Remember on tape and thought it was the biggest bunch of sap I had ever heard. Sorry if this is being sacreligious.
We both have a problem...I've seen your "books i need to read" list
Luv Tom Hanks...I'll be sure to see it..
