Though I think you'll find it hard to get through to lukeprog, as I'm sure he leans towards a more central, economic rationalist worldview (correct me if I'm wrong Luke).

Brilliant!

How exciting…

Don't mind me,
Though I might chip in when I can contribute to the flavour of the discussion…
(If it's not too intrusive)

"Suppose you are an intellectual impostor with nothing to say, but with strong ambitions to succeed in academic life, collect a coterie of reverent disciples and have students around the world anoint your pages with respectful yellow highlighter. What kind of literary style would you cultivate? Not a lucid one, surely, for clarity would expose your lack of content"

Hmmm, could one apply that very same criticism to a certain revered someone who seems to have a knack for side-stepping the whole process of lucid philosophical observation? Observe:

“It is not the light,
it is the darkness that blinds you.“

“What needs our sorrow, shall need our forgiveness.“

“We'll never be never.“

“Nothing ever happens.“

“Truth is the lie
and every lie is a truth“.

…and the kicker:

“I know less and less.“

“I see everything everywhere.“

Soul-stirring (and possibly self-contradictory) words. It shouldn't matter though, as the mere exercise of quoting Dawkins and worshipping Scaruffi is in itself a curious decision (in my mind, perhaps somewhat lacking in ideological consistency).

It'd be nice if you explained, Lorem…

Hmmm, If your referring to favourite song, then my favourite, would have to be… ummmm… hmmmmm… damnit! They all effect me in such different ways, so at the moment it's apples and oranges.

I was directed to lukeprogs list through other means (his website)

As I've constantly repeated, an opinion is only as how well you justify it. I thought lukeprog was doing himself a disservice by not elaborating on his methods, explaining his rationale etc. Of course he's made giant steps in mending the situation by linking me a string of very insightful comments which go a long way in expressing his thoughts on many issues. It's a very enjoyable read!

That said, I can't wait for lukeprog to free up some time, as I still have some reservations. But really, what kind of a discussion would this be if I didn't? (Plus I'm eagerly awaiting his thirty page magnum opus (however long it takes to produce) which I'm sure will challenge Derrida for the place of critical magnum opus ;D )

I don't think I ever said I didn't like your list. To be honest, I actually enjoy many of your selections.

Individual lists are useless however, when they are not based on (at least a smidgen of) clear rationale. I think the main problem I had was your lack of clarity. It was frustrating for me to read your responses. They did little to address the issues I brought up, and did not dispel the confusing haze which followed the ambiguous nature of your writing.

Thanks for the thinks! Better late than never I suppose…

I appreciate it immensely.

Note, I did say the idea was contentious…

Though it's curious that you believe that if someone listened to Rhianna and Mozart, they could extract the same emotional response from both pieces.

Hmmm, maybe I should go into specifics. If one were to listen to Rhianna's hit song Don't Stop the Music (the song being composed of a constant, repetitive percussive rythm, verse-chorus format, a sample of a Michael Jackson song sampled and looped in the background) and then one were to listen to Mozart's Lacrimosa (which is composed of… well, I don't want to cheapen the work so let's just say other dynamics) without stylistic boundaries and appreciating the sound on its own terms (this is an ideal state of being and thus we can only hope to reach as close to this theoretical state as possible(I elaborate slightly on this in a previous post)) would there really ever exist a situation where someone felt the exact same emotional response from both tracks, considering their distinct musical differences?

Just a thought…

Ummm… I'm eighteen. I don't understand what sock-puppeting is, neither do I understand your focus on the more trivial aspects of my comment (which is what I think nathan192001 was alluding to… I don't understand what sock-puppets have anything to do with it)

you're an authority once other people consider you to be one!

Of course! Though if your using that as your sole rationale to justify your admiration of Lukeprog, regardless of any criticisms I might have of his ideas…

Then my brother is an authority on music because I consider him as such (he listens to Glam-Rock and Kanye West. It's great stuff, you should check it out).

I'm sorry if I've come across as condescending or hot-headed. I'm still learning the rules of polite discourse. Hopefully now you can express your opinions on some of the issues I've brought up?

Thanks :)

Kudos on your google skills. What surprises me is your hostility.

My blog is just a thought dump; It doesn't have to make sense because it expresses what I'm thinking/feeling on a whim. I post anything that might come into my head, undeveloped, warts and all. Notice I've disabled comments on it, because the only people I expect to see it are my friends.

It's all a learning process and to be honest, If I had a need to express formal, well-though out observations in an academic style, then I would do it through other means.

Instead of resorting to personal attacks, why not just discuss different issues with me and try and persuade my opinion through other means?

Suppose you are an intellectual impostor with nothing to say, but with strong ambitions to succeed in academic life

Ummm, wow, imposter? Nothing to say? I'm just a guy who reads a heap of crap and asks questions. Sure I might get frustrated and write in a strong tone (note: amending that problem), but is that really a basis to launch personal attacks?

That said, I also want to know how old you are. I'm curious to know…

mmmm, It says nineteen because I imputed a random birthday into the last.fm registration (I was a tad impatient). If you really want to know, my birthday is on the 22nd of November (1989), thus making me eighteen :D.
