Tracks/Albums I like from other genres

Hey guys....

So how's life?

Its only been a few months, but I've been all over the place. Had a stint with IDM/drum 'n' bass/trip hop, now I listen to classical / soundtrack music. I really think it is one of the more rewarding types of music. Most songs, barring monsters like Lux Aeterna, don't really hit you hard, but I feel satisfied after listening to it for a while. And its easy listening. I hate loud music. Breakbeats ftw.

I've been hating trance (even old trance) more and more. I don't see much in it anymore.

But above all, I hate pop trance. I absolutely hate pop music. It's like sugar, it gives you an instant high but ultimately fucks you up. Every time I hear some pop track "Please Don't Stop the music" or "No Air" blasting out of some car I'm totally disgusted.

Seeing that I've moved between genres like a hundred times in the past year, I might ditch classical too. But I haven't gotten tired of it yet.

I've also stopped listening to most of my albums, now I listen to radio primarily. Much more convenient.

So that's about it. My life is boring I know. Beat Doom 1 last week.

My Favourite Albums/Tracks By Lieb

I'll take a look. Mentasm is a sick track!

I've moved onto more listening music - idm/dnb, trip hop, jazzy stuff, classical/soundtrack/scores

If I had to predict where I might go next it'll probably be more classical because it has such an elegant sound to it

If you like tribal music, one album I was amazed by is Etnoscope - Drums Before The Dawn Of Time.

My Favourite Albums/Tracks By Lieb

I've heard all of his albums under his L.S.G. alias, and the only ones I really think are worth it are "Into Deep" and "The Best Of L.S.G (Original Mixes)" LP and the "Blueprint EP". Into Deep and the Blueprint EP are the only ones that really function as albums and are not boring. Into Deep is a great ambient album that's pretty interesting all throughout. The Blueprint EP is probably Lieb at his best, featuring several mixes of some great melodic trance music. Volume Two isn't really boring, but besides Netherworld and Centurion, the quality is abysmal. The Black Album features a style (hard techno) that I'm not interested in; I find it very repetitive and pointless. I have many techno albums, but that's not one I really enjoyed. "Rendezvous..." I enjoyed because of the variation in style and synths, but it was nothing truly memorable. Most of these tracks would work on the dancefloor, but for home listening it really lacks that activity that is needed to captivate the listener. I have yet to check out his Spicelab and Ambush albums.

Maybe it's just cause my taste has gotten farther and farther from trance. Trance is primarily a dance music, after all, and much of it works well in a club but not so great at home or in the car. This is especially true of the lame modern trance.

Anyways, just my opinion, have a nice day :D

If anyone's looking for a good place to discuss music, I'd suggest coming to discogs - many old school EDM lovers there:

Best Trance/House/Rave/Techno from 1990-1996

Um, well, yeah, I've heard Ame - Rej, and all I hear is a soft melody. Stuff is going on, but its not really captivating to me. It doesn't pull me into the music. Its not something I would really want to actively listen or dance to, as opposed to sleep or relax to.

Well, fta I don't like most minimal, but I like Acid Eiffel. The acid synth sounds like its constantly changing, and the pads in the background make it seem like it has a direction.

It sounds kind of like Digeridoo, and that's a track I *really* like right there.

No way! I'm still going to listen to the goa stuff I think are original and creative...like Zodiac Youth's album, Hallucinogen's album, Shpongle's albums, Astral Projection's albums...

The tracks you mentioned are very original - but there are plenty other lesser known stuff that don't really have anything unique.

I heard those songs, and although they're nice, I don't think they can even be compared to AP's masterpieces in Dancing Galaxy, Kabalah, People Can Fly, Mahadeva, etc. etc.

Well anyways, its only been a few weeks since we last talked, and my goa infatuation has passed. There's too much repetition and not enough innovation - I like something thats unique, not just any old layered acid bonanza. Innovation is what drives all music.

For example, Astral Projection - Another World doesn't deserve to be on the list, imo, because there's only one track on there, Searching for UFOs, which has some real originality...the others are really generic and weak.

After Trust In Trance and Dancing Galaxy, I think AP started their downfall. After 2000 their albums were decent at best, and they've really lost the goa sound in their work. They peaked at Trust In Trance, no doubt.

Best Trance/House/Rave/Techno from 1990-1996

Tbh I don't think anyone listens it to make them intelligent. Why would anyone want to seem intelligent? Most people want to seem tough - that's why some of them listen to gangster rap, or drum 'n' bass.

There are many elitists, but they're just dumbasses, and a minority too. IDM/ambient/techno are really great genres.

Still, I can't really "get" most minimal. Not enough happening - the subtleties are a bit too subtle for me to pick up.

I think the best way to define my taste is anything that sounds like several weeks or months work went into it. Like Sasha's Xpander E.P. (one of my favorite CDs of all time) - every track sounds like he spent a year on it.

I'll check him out. Yeah, I love the orb's stuff...especially Huge Ever Growing Pulsating etc. etc. and Fluffy Clouds.

And THANK YOU for saying minimal sucks. So many once great progressive house artists have gone down that road and its the most boring crap I have ever heard, barring a few releases.

After listening to both Rez and Spastik for a while, i'm starting to like em...

Btw, you listen to any techno? I'm getting into this genre, and it sounds pretty awesome...spastik, orbital's chime, beltram's energy flash...they all rock. plus, it's so easy to dance to

I really like the ambient and idm side of it too, aphex twin, venetian snares, etc. etc., good listening music in addition to dance music

We're at 400. 400 trance songs. OMGWTFBBQ (Took long enough)

Cause it's true.

Most people who have been in the trance scene for more than three years have moved on. Just go to any forum, tranceaddict, trance.nu, its always the veteran listeners that are the ones criticizing the genre. That's because dutch trance gets old quickly...when you first hear it you enjoy it, but as soon as the really good tracks lose their appeal and you hear the same old generic uplift, you get tired of it and move on. Plus, you can't dance to anthem after anthem all night - you get tired of the buildup-climax-breakdown formula quickly.

True trance is dead. Ferry Corsten did help kill it.

Got any you want to suggest just post

How about a separate list for like a "Hall Of Fame" of goa trance? The best of the best. Cause I checked out some of your recommendations...some of the tracks on the albums are spot on, others are lame...how about a list on a track per track basis?

The video is pretty interesting, I like watching historical documentaries on music.

Karan, I'm fully convinced now that goa (and more generally, acid) is the best subgenre of trance.

It totally fits my mood, and it can be more uplifting than something like Rank 1 - Airwave.

Goa isn't ever going truly mainstream. All I hope for is a revival, be it underground, and the eradication of psy trance. Psy is great (but inferior to goa), but if its going to kick out goa, I dont have room for it.

Btw, I came across an artist "Doof" who has a lot of releases and some of them seem nice. What tracks of his are most important to have?
