Um... good question. I'm really partial to Castle in the Sky and Howl's Moving Castle, but not one decisively more than the other. Also, I don't expect it really falls under "Anime" per se, but theres a great French movie, the Triplets of Belleville, which is animated and is very good. Even though it is in french, there is almost no talking throughout the whole movie, so that barrier is pretty superficial. The beginning is a bit slow, but if you tough it out it is pretty good imho. Hows that for answering your question without answering it? =)
Here are some more ideas...
Tearing of paper
a rolling coin (like down one of those charity coin funnel dealies)
that sort of oscillating noise as something spinning slows down, think like an astronaut centrifuge coming to a stop, with the gap between SHOOMP!s getting greater between each one
Bacon sizzling
The sound a motorboat makes (BBBBBBbbbbbbbbbb!)
That noise in movies/TV for when somebody slips
A hydraulic release kind of noise (watch pretty much any sci-fi space movie lol)
The trademark Tarzan yell
That's all I got for now, I'll tell ya if I think of any more =D
Hurray, somebody gives some love to Lupin III! I have yet to not enjoy one of the many, many Lupin movies, they're great stuff. Really, Princess Mononoke as #1? It's good, no doubt about that, but I just have a harder time connecting with the characters in that than in most other Miyazakis. I do, however, give it respect, as it was the first anime I ever saw. Also, Akira. It's good, and breathtakingly beautifully done, but once again I find it a little hard to identify with the characters, seeing as they aren't really... well... moral lol. Absorbing plot, though. Sorry, don't mean to rag on the list, just giving my 2 cents, and of all on your list that I've seen I've loved, don't get me wrong. Ghost in the Shell... (Drools...) AWESOME series (the 2nd Gig anyways, haven't seen the first series), but a HORRIBLY unsatisfying ending. Love it anyways though =P
Gotta love them Miyazaki movies... not sure exactly what kinda anime you're looking for but Miyazaki's Nausicca is allright, but My Neighbor Totoro is, while kind of a kid's movie, really really good. They're just so darn cute! Also, have you seen any of the Lupin III series? I've found it to be pretty darn good, more so with the movies than the show though.
How about the sound of a car passing at a high speed? Knuckles cracking? (although that may have more to do with the actual cracking than the sound)The sound a foam-bladed fan makes when you touch its spinning edge? Church bells calling out the hour? just some ideas =)
How about Jean Michel Jarre's classic Oxygene album? pretty dreamy for the most part, and a great electronic composer. I think he actually also had the largest concert audience ever too, '97 Moscow, surprising for an electronic musician imho, not that it isn't merited =)
I couldn't help but add my personal favorite (and terribly obscure) compilation-album that mostly fits the ambient genre, although sometimes it gets a little busy. It's called "Anamoog", and it starts with the one track I've ever been able to find from its artist, Air 2 Zero, by Squaredust. It's got lots of other great stuff, from artists like wavestar to the decades-old Kraftwerk, to soundtrack composers such as Jerry Goldsmith and Christopher Franke (former member of Tangerine Dream), great stuff all. And it ends with a synthesized rendition of Led Zeppelin's Whole Lotta Love, kind of kills the mood but is entertaining to hear. Off of it I've found Wavestar and Redshift to be especially promising after further investigation. Wavestar's album Zenith is pretty choice, in my opinion. I actually got Anamoog from my father, and I have no clue where he found it, so I will try to upload it, probably to mininova, whenever I get a chance. Let me know what you think =)
