Thanks Joachim. I can't see myself getting through the 600-odd I haven't seen any time soon.

"1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die"

Hi everyone, I have now posted a list on this site of all movies listed in "They Shoot Pictures, Don't They" Greatest 1,000 Films lists since 2003. Without checking I'm going to arrogantly assume that this is the only place on the whole internet that has all the films on one page.

There are a lot of movies on these lists that aren't in the movies you must see before you die.

Enjoy.

Congrats!! It's great that you've made it and that I'm not the only one to have seen them. I remember Deseret was the second last one I watched early last year. I found it really gripping, even though it's minimalist. I had a look at the Shoot Horses lists and there are quite a lot there that I haven't seen either though I don't think I'll focus on seeing them all any time too soon.

Thanks for that Joachim, it's really interesting. I'll have to try to see the movies you've mentioned at some stage. I live in Australia and we didn't get specialised editions.

I think I downloaded Too Early, Too Late (or Trop Tot, Trop Tard or Zu Fruh, Zu Spat) using the links below that were listed on the website: http://sharebus.com

I had to use a similar process when I watched it a couple of years ago, including the subtitle difficulties. But you can translate more than a line at a time with google translate. I found for most movies it can handle at least a third of the dialogue at a time. I'd copy the whole non-English subtitle file into Google Translate, it would cut out after a certain point so then I'd grab the translated stuff off the top and repeat. I think that the only remaining issue was Google changed "-->" to "->" (I'm talking .srt here). That just required a find replace to fix and then it worked.

Good luck Joachim, some of the last ones that I saw were the most interesting.

The only place where I could find this movie is on the worldscinema.com website where it's available to download.

I just noticed that L Discaciate asked me a little while ago what my favourite movie from the list was.

Sorry I didn't get around to responding to this sooner, it slipped through the cracks.

The last time (that was quite a long time ago) I attempted to rank these movies the two that stood out at the top of my list were:

Mulholland Dr. and
2001: A Space Odyssey

I'll have to revisit this at some stage but any list I come up with would have these two very close to the top.

I think I'll list some of the other movies in the list that I absolutely loved. There are very few of my favourite movies that don't come from the 1001. The only one that comes to mind is Wim Wenders' Kings of the Road.

The Godfather
Lawrence of Arabia
Eyes Wide Shut
A Brighter Summer Day
Apocalypse Now
The Mother and the Whore
Vertigo
The Seventh Seal
Ran
Three Colours: Red

This is far from exhaustive. I'm struggling to avoid jotting down 100+ movies. There are so many good movies on the list that there are many many movies that I liked almost as much as the one's I've listed above and I'm sure as soon as I've posted this I'll think of one or two more I should have mentioned.

Thanks mannce for the new editions. I have added to the list.
You're obviously much more in touch with this sort of thing than the 1001 website that hasn't been updated yet. When that one is I'll double-check the years and titles of the movies (e.g. whether they have 'The' in front of them in the book). Now I have to get back on the bandwagon of locating these movies, after only a few months of having them all done. Still it should be fun!

Hi El Barto,

Thanks for your words. I think the most movies I watched in one week was 34 back in 2005. I'd come really close to finishing last year but it took me about a year to track down the last two movies - Deseret and Too Early, Too Late. I basically used every source I could find, including buying when necessary. It's amazing how many were available just by renting in my local area and even from local libraries. I rented Salo from a library even though it was banned in my country. There aren't too many that I needed to buy. Some weren't even easy to buy. I bought Last Chants for a Slow Dance by contacting the director (Jon Jost) personally - he was great to talk to and sent me a dvd. I've had no issues with watching some of the films online through YouTube and other online video sites. Also downloading some of the obscure titles resulted in me watching English language movies dubbed into other languages with English subtitles. Two non-English movies that I can think of - Midnight Song and Keeper of Promises, I couldn't find subtitles at all for at the time and I watched them without any. Both were still pretty powerful experiences. A Tale of the Wind I watched online. It's in French, the online video had Spanish subtitles, so I frequently paused and translated each subtitle into English using Google Translate - whatever was necessary. When I get a chance I'd like to rewatch some of these when better versions become readily available.

My current task is the 1001 Books... which as you'll agree is much harder work and will take a long time. I started early last year and have read about 130 books in 18 months since then, but since I'd had so few to start with it looks like a hard slog.

It's been a long slog, almost 6 years since I first got this book and this week I've finally watched the last movie. I'm glad I managed to get it done before I turned 26. I've had a great time tracking all these down. It's a big relief to have it over with.

Now I want all of you out there to step it up and get through them. I was happy to find that all of the titles were available to me in at least some form. This list is totally achievable. Get to it!

There's a good chance that I might knock the last two supplementary off in the next week (I've got to find 6 1/2 hours to get through the Best of Youth) and in that case my work will be complete, that is until they put out another revised edition. So adios.
