Top 400 trance tracks of all time

One thing about Dj Dado darktremor
I suggested Metropolis (The Legend of Babel) should be on the list.
You said you don't like Dj Dado and hate dreamscape

I agree with you that dreamscape is pretty boring and rhythmless but have your heard the extended vocal mix of Metropolis?

That track has rankee the first place on the Dj Parade and all the most important dance music ranks for months!

It has everything: fantastic rhythm, excellent variations, beautiful sounds, creative and original melodies. It is clearly a track that required lot of work and passion and I don't know of anyone who think it isn't great, especially if they have danced it with their eyes closed on a big disco like cocoricò or duple

You should give it a second listen. It has nothing to do with the banal and boring dreamscape

Darktremor's 50 Favorite house tracks, in order of best to...less best

[Daft Punk cannot be French if they're 100% Italian, which is why it's a good thing they're 100% French]

My mistake! We've always been told they were italian ... or maybe I just confused them with Eiffel 65 that have a French name but are italian :|

I too believed that several of those tracks were eurodance but discogs.com list them as house

My definition of house is the combination of typically afro-american sounds (jazz, blues, grass, soul) with the eletronic sounds and kick'n'snares rhythm of dance. So piano, trumpets, organs and real bass are often present in an house song

Following this narrow definition the tracks I'm sure are 100% house among the ones I listed are:

Tori Amos - Professional Widow
Rotane Celvin - I believe
Double You - Loving You
Joy Salinas - Bip Bip
Dana Dawson - Three is Family
Whirlpool Productions - From Disco To Disco

plus:

Bamboo - Bamboogie
Boris Dlugosch - Keep pushin’
Regina - Killing me Softly
Justofunk - Can we Live
Martha Wash - Keep On Jumping
Hysteric Ego - Want Love
BarBara Tucker - Beautiful People
Robin S - Show me Low
Martin Solveig - Rocking Music
Crystal Waters - Gypsy Woman
Jaydee - Plastic Dreams
Tina Cousins - Killing Time
Tanya Louise - I Made It Over
Gala - Everybody has inside
Black Machine - You make me come A Life
Zoonka - Beats in Africa
Alex Party - Wrap me Up

Music genres that need to die

I have to disagree that the value of a song or genre depends on how "innovative" it is
This is a post-modernist obsession and post-modernism artistically has been one of the most stagnant and snob era

Music is first of all a language (it's interesting to read that certain old cultures used words to express concrete concepts and music to express sentiments i.e. there were no words for feelings or subjective emotions) and as a language it's not important to reinvent the wheel each time but what you want to express with it
Being it a language it is also almost impossible to have a passion for music and being uncreative in music making. You don't need to create new sounds or devices to be "original" as originality is just that particular and unique way you have to think of melodic progression and sounds and that's why even when an artist mimics another style it remains unique. We all have absorbed musical information we have collected in our life and we all have unique brains and emotions which process those information in unique ways. We can't help but being original (if there's passion) because we're nothing but original and don't need to invent new sounds of reform a genre to show our unborn originality. Creativity is spontaneous and it needn't be seeked at all cost.
Actually seeking to be "creative" at all cost by avoiding certain sounds or musical ideas and artificially creating "innovations" destroys the spontaneity and artistic quality of the creation

The innovations we have experienced like going from 80's discos to 90's trance were just spontaneous and steady, it was cultural fruition of music that shaped them not the conscious effort to be fakely creative

Like language what is important is not to invent new letters to add to the alphabet or to form new meaningless words no one understand, but how you use words that everyone know and use to create your own unique concepts and ideas to convey

The conscious effort to be "innovative" by avoiding spontaneity in artistic creations and adding easy-created "strange" as an "innovative characteristics" is what destroys music, painting, sculpture and poetry. The real creativity is just creating what you feel like creating in that moment of inspiration free from bondaries, limitations or pressure to be innovative or not to be derivative (the best operas of Mozart, Beethoven and Scarlatti [just to name few] were derivative ... and absolute masterpieces of originality

Worst trance song of all time

Scatman John - Scatman is not trance but house/dance and it is actually good song for two reasons
First of all is cool to listen too: good rhythm, good melody, good sounds
But it is also the effort of John Scatman (a severe stuttering musician) to show kids that they can overcome their problems if they work hard
His stuttering was so bad that he was considered invalidated and he found out that through singing he was able to overcome his stutter and could sing with an amazing fluency. The kids that listened his songs loved him, especially stutter-suffering kids, and he has has been praised by the National Stuttering Association. Unfortunately he died of lung cancer in his 50

Best animated kids movies that don't "pander"

I totally agree with your list
I especially agree with putting Winnie the Pooh movie there. I even wrote a dissertion explaining what imo are the merits of winnie the pooh (a microcosmos in which Christopher find evasion from the cold streets of London) It's beautifully antiquate ... belonging to an old sensitivity we should recover nowadays

I also agree about Alice. It's one of the most genuinely imaginative movie ever. And Spirited Away clearly is inspired by it (Miyazaki is a fan of the early disney movies)

I can't see though how so many disney movies are missing from your list !

Bambi?
It's the animated features with the smallest amount of dialogues. A movie need to be a superbly directed masterpiece to remain interesting even if 60% of it is just immersed in music or silence

The Little Mermaid?
This is another thoughtful movie. So good in not talking down to younger one that instead of sinking into ageist stereoypes show teens that they can make their choice, have their freedom even if that means fighting against parents, institutions and rules

The secret of nihm?
A great fantasy animated feature which never once is paternalistic or prudish. Death, life, love and hate are all described without tabus and the music is always poignantly dark. Nothing in the movie says "we can't do that, there are young kids watching!" because the phylosophy behind it is "the hell with paternalistic nonsense! Young kids have brains too ... often better ones than ours!"

and also 101 dalmatians, The Great Mouse Detective, The Black Cauldron (another great fantasy) ?

Top 400 trance tracks of all time

As for Children I agree but harder trance with a dream sound (for example: Cyclone Tracy - Piano in Trance) sounds imo more trance than ATB, BBE or Darude do

The question is: what is trance?
If you ask this to an italian he/she will reply that trance is that kind of music that makes you travel with your mind and eyes closed even if you're still in the same place. It's evocative and enigmatic music which make you think of wide open spaces even without being ambient
Trance is a trip

A trance anthem (here) which is often used an example of how with trance you can close your eyes and just have your voyage(trip) is:
Blue Alphabet - Cybertrance

Darude, ATB, BBE or Quicksilver may be considered trance but they don't have this "travelling" quality which is typical of pure trance ... before contaminations. In fact the name itself says it all "trance" as in an "altered state of consciousness" and is somewhat called here "hypnotic music"
Darude, Picotto, BBE or ATB are not enough "introspective" and spacey to induce a "trance state" in the person that listens to them
The tracks I have listed can do that instead

I think Children is the worse example of dream and can't still see why it became so famous. Dream can be way better. Few examples:

Eta Beta J - On The Road (trance mix)
Nylon Moons - Sky Plus
Zyon - No Fate
Gigi D'agostino - Noise Maker Theme

((Still, I'll check out the tracks you've mentioned))

Let me know what's your opinion and if you plan to add them somewhere in the list
Check Blue Alphabet and Piano in Trance too
Piano in Trance is considered one of the biggest Trance Anthems in Europe.

Top 400 trance tracks of all time

I'm writing from Italy
I have noticed that a whole period is lacking from that list. That is the 1995-1996 era of dreamy italian trance or mediterranean progressive

The world famous dance clubs (cocoricò and douple) in those years played just trance and so many italian artists appeared, made themselves famous all over europe (don't know about america) and changed the whole trance genre

I know you may think "but it's just italy you're talking about, not the whole world" but italy is a motherland for trance and most of its innovations
Without the italian trance of 1995-1996 there would have been no Robert Miles since Roberto Concina didn't come up from nowhere with its sound, he didn't invent it ... just absorbed it from the whole club scene around him and from other artists that didn't get the credits they deserved for creating the dream sound

Trance for many people means the typical 1995-1996 sound of cocoricò and in your list there's no sign of it.

Just to make few names

Rexantony
It has been consider an innovator, one of the first to mix the hard trance sound with the dream stile that was developing in italy. His "Polaris Dream" has been a huge hit in italy and europe

Roland Brent
Another father of the Miles sound
His tracks like Moon's Waterfall/Nuclear Sun and Hyperspace are epic for anyone who have lived the night life of those years

Daniele Gas
The teacher of Miles one of the greatest innovator of the trance-dream style. His sunflowers was a big hit

Gigi D'agostino
The father of mediterranean progressive and master of mauro picotto. His hits like "Gigi's Violin / Elektro Message" "New Year Day" and "Angel Symphony" have sold thousands of copies all over europe

All the trance hits of 1995-1996 are anthems in europe and have shaped and developed the genre
This is a typical play list of a 1995-1996 night at cocoricò

Rexantony - Polaris Dream
Dream Crasher - Forest Dream
Quadran - Eternally
RAF by Picotto - Bakerloo Symphony
Nostrum - Brainchild
Sunbeam - Outsideworld
Datura - Eternity
Dj Dado - Metropolis
Saccoman - Sunshine Dance/Pyramid Soundwave
X-Form - Pleasure Voyage
Nyloc - Capricorn EP

If you listen these, you'll hear a typical trance sound which has been the foundation of what trance developed into and I can assure you that at least in half europe that's what they thought about when you mentioned trance. Your list is very good but so alien to the trance world we have experienced
I think that Quadran, Nostrum, D'agostino, Rexantony, Sunbeam and Dj Dado at least should be somewhere in your list
