Listening Log (album reviews)

There's a great album in there somewhere, if enough was stripped away. As some listeners have pointed out, the music isn't given a chance to breathe as we're bombarded with lyrics.

I still haven't heard Modern Times and I probably wont ever hear it. The critics have been crying wolf about his albums for years now.

borrowing your format for a minute --

[Hated] Joanna Newsom - Ys (2006): Seriously, every-music-critic-in-the-world. What the hell. I'm bailing.

She never shuts up.

If I was in the studio this would have ended up an instrumental album.

Piero Scaruffi Notes

Another one that Scaruffi doesn't have a profile of is Gillian Welch. Her Time (The Revelator) impressed a lot of people. I'm still undecided about it. I doubt Scaruffi would like it much.

I'll try to think of a few more. There are probably some on my lists that he doesn't mention

Who is the greatest lyricist? (not including Bob Dylan or Leonard Cohen)

I voted for Nick Cave. He's probably be #1 even if Dylan and Cohen were included.

Others i might have considered if they were on the list: springsteen, randy newman.

It is incredible though. It has more jaw-dropping scenes than any film I've seen in a few years, and i've been slogging through lots and lots of the all time greats.

Ha. I actually saw it without any idea what it was about, apart from it being some sort of war movie.

Did you get to see it on a big screen?

I noticed that it's on the 1000 "they shoot pictures" list which you have posted. I'm watching a lot from the "1001 movies you MUST SEE!!" book, which hugely overlaps that other list. I'll be working through that after (or if) i finish the 1001.
What do you think of Rosenbaum's Essential 1000 Films compared to the other lists?
