Good experience overall, but it didn't mesmerize me the same way Tree of Life did and I found some bits to be less interesting than others (though such is life, I guess).
Have you ever seen any of Ross McElwee's docos? He covers the same kind of minutiae but always relates it to his own life in a way that's very compelling.
Sucks, I'm surprised there's not an HDTV rip yet, it's easily been long enough.
Haven't. Did listen to Fleetwood Mac's '75 self-titled, though, brilliance. Life without "Monday Morning" was basically empty, oh my god addictive. Between that and Rumours they've cornered the market on "first tracks so good you just keep replaying them instead of continuing." Prefer the live version of "Landslide" but it's still a classic.
Best of the year, damn. I'll deffo get on it soon.
Re: George doco, I think it's just airing on HBO right now, that's probably why. Lemme know if you run across it online and vice-versa. Heard zero XTC, downloading Skylarking immediately after that kinda praise!
Had a similar reaction to the finale. I've watched it twice now, the last 20 minutes are truly amazing, emotional, shocking, everything you want from BB, but the plotting leading up to it is less intricate/intense than we've come to expect. Instead of really ramping up the stakes, complicating that Walt/Gus psychological warfare even further, they went a more A-to-B route, which was MAYBE a little underwhelming but still well-done. I also think the episode as a whole had the misfortune of following "Crawl Space" and "End Times," two prime examples of the show at its very best. Still, I mean, it's Breaking Bad, so it's automatically better than most TV. Gus walking out is one of the show's finest moments, unforgettable, audacious as fuck, an appropriately eye-raising exit for one of TV's most enigmatic and inscrutable characters. And the final shot gave me chills even though everyone on FJ had figured it out already (especially loved the use of Danger Mouse & Daniele Luppi's "Black," one of my favorite songs this year). SO READY FOR SEASON 5.
Damn, that's disappointing to hear. :( Don't want to go looking for spoilers, but thanks for the heads-up anyway. I'll make sure to keep my expectations in check when I go see it (not out 'til December here).
"the cinematography is even better than Tree of Life." This is exciting enough on its own, normally I would've been skeptical of such high praise but I felt the same about Drive, haha.
I saw it first thing last Friday AND THEN saw it again Saturday. A CINEMATIC ORGASM. One part flawless stylistic exercise (think Le Samourai crossed with Thief), one part INTENSE crime-thriller, one part moving character study. It covers all the bases and hits even harder than you'd expect it to, viscerally and emotionally. Suspense to the max with BRUTAL payoffs. Gosling is quiet, implosive, absolutely captivating. Supporting cast is stellar (Cranston!). Refn's direction is a masterclass in tension, not to mention his vision of L.A. is the best since Collateral. Gorgeous cinematography elevated by an amazing synth soundtrack that I've been replaying all weekend. If I haven't sold it enough, I'll just say, a few more viewings and it might overtake Red State. Genre filmmaking at its most potent.
Any specific criticisms for Pulp or is it simply "this is how much I like it"? Just curious since most people 10 it, I know 8 is a damn positive rating for you in any case.
Nah, I really need to update and get it up on here. Same for my top films.
Having now seen it, you crazy.

Also, did you see the Breaking Bad finale?!
And you

A Real Human Being

Yesterday was a baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaad day. :'(
Not sure about all-time yet, thinking 40's though. Drive would be close behind.
P.S. Good luck at uni!

Real excited for Tinker Tailor.
Saw you pimping it on IMDb, rated it 10 of course. ;)
