I have no real "terms of service" per se, and I don't really care if anyone wants to link off to any other content. If you're linking off to Amazon, i'd prefer you use our affiliate ID in the links or none. The divide I see here is - if you're linking directly off listology to another site using your own affiliate id, that's a bummer to me because you're using the site as your own advertising platform. If you want to link off to your own site, that's fine I don't really care about that, within the realms of legality and whatnot.
All that said though, I don't plan on sitting around policing links all day and unless someone complains about some content I'm pretty easy-going about things.
I was thinking of a checkbox or flag of some sort the registered users can hit to recommend content, or most viewed across a rolling time period, 'most recommended', definitely something along those lines.
The new site will incorporate free tagging, so you will be able to classify your content however you want, which I think will really help to bubble up content to places it didn't before. So you could just tag all your review content as "review" and be done with it.
I'm hoping to get a simple visual HTML editor in, but I'm not happy with any of the ones I've seen yet.
I'm thinking about extended profile functionality but I want to do it in a cool useful way like Facebook where they link off to other people who share them. It might end up being a "version 2" feature.
We will continue to have "endorsements" of users and that could possibly be used as a rating system of sorts (most endorsed for instance.)
I really hadn't considered span. Do you find it useful? I had really been more thinking of just allowing font, but i could probably enable span too if you think it would be useful.
<strong> is the current more semantic equivalent of <b> (just as <em> is the current more semantic equivalent of <i>) I should consider either converting / allowing the old ones for backwards compatibility though.
The biggest issue is called cross-site scripting, and its difficult to explain without getting too technical, but it has to do with allowing people to embed script into pages such that bad guys can do things like steal your login information. Anytime you've heard stuff in the news about GMail/Myspace/Facebook having security issues it is because of this. It can also allow people to do things like embed viruses or spyware into pages. It's very tricky to avoid, and the people implementing it are very clever.
There are other issues but that is definitely the biggest.
I'm torn about <img>. There are ways in which it can be used maliciously, but I also know there are many lists currently using it and my only other option is to allow users to upload images locally which is a) a pain and b) costs more money to host. I will probably add <font> to the list since font coloring has been requested.
I will be using an open-source content management system called Drupal to build the new Listology. It is coming along ... slowly. My current plan is to launch with the same features as the current Listology, plus a lot of niceties that Drupal comes with out of the box. In terms of these specific requests...
- Permalinks to comments will be there
- Mobile is an interesting though that wouldn't be too tough. I'll have to keep that in mind.
- Adding new fields to user profiles is pretty simple and I'd be open to any suggestions.
- I'm currently considering just dumping user rating entirely. Without a reputation or meta-moderation system it seems kind of pointless. Thoughts?
I am adding avatars but they will be pretty laid back.
I should ask Jim if I can make a front page post to solicit opinions and report on status. Thanks for the comments!
Thanks to everyone for the kind words. I look forward to getting the new site up and running as soon as possible! I definitely intend to keep the site simple (list making will change very little) but add some updates here and there. If anyone has any thoughts or suggestions, please feel free to get in touch! I'm excited!

The funny thing is I actually didn't see Soul Coughing. I went to see Low then took off!
This list is still soooo incomplete.

Just to make it clear, I'm not doing away with HTML, I'm just limiting it to a minimal subset of what was previously allowed.
Its just an HTML way to say "this batch of text has certain attributes".

All of the existing classes are going to change / go away as part of the re-design, so any existing span tags are going to be pretty much moot.
I was going to look into adding a little HTML editor into the text boxes, there are several options and I may not have time to do it for launch.
As far as the templates, probably not anytime soon. I'll keep it in mind though!

At the moment it is
<a> <em> <strong> <cite> <code> <ul> <ol> <li> <dl> <dt> <dd> <h1> <h2> <h3> <spoiler>

Any worries? Anything else you'd like to see?

So far as I am planning, it is permanent. I have no intention of simply being a "temporary" landing place.
