I AM NOT RECEIVING NOTIFICATION EMAILS FOR ANY POSTS ON LISTOLOGY (except for original posts, i.e. "Post new comment" posts), are you?

The only posts I see with that handle are comments on other people's posts, correct? I might be able to fix those.

FYI I have received all notifications from this thread at Gmail so the system does seem to be working correctly.

That makes sense. Your email to me went to the Listology Gmail account, where as this comes from a different server. I have also seen this problem with hotmail users (I get a lot of emails from people at hotmail and yahoo asking why they didn't get new account confirmations, and no emails from any other email providers.)

I responded with the following to Feif this morning but I will offer it here as well. I also recently upgraded the comment notifications module, because there was a bug that may have been causing us problems. Anything people can add to help me debug this issue would be welcomed.

---

One thing I notice is that you have a Yahoo email address. I have been receiving a lot of reports lately from people at Yahoo not receiving Listology emails. I have been trying to contact Yahoo to find out what the problem is but so far no luck. As a temporary measure, if you have another email address, you may want to try it. It would be good to know if this is just a Listology problem or a Yahoo problem.

Additionally, I have recently enabled RSS comment feeds for all lists. This allows you to follow comments on threads you're watching through an RSS reader. I realize it may not be as desirable as email but its all I can offer at the moment until I find out what is going on.

Search is back

Oh! That was an oversight on my part. Those features are back, I didn't realize I needed to explicitly turn them back on when I turned search back on. Thanks for pointing it out.

Search is back

The big problem is the service I am using to index content, the auto-match thing actually adds very little overhead. I can move to a simpler indexing service, however it would result in an immense reduction in functionality. The ability to filter searches by user, by type, by tag, and to see related content, all come from this service and would go away without it. These are pretty compelling features and I would really like to find a way to keep the existing search stable. It's just a matter of finding a clear day or two to make it happen.

Everyone will be happy to know I've restored search. I have not gotten around to improving its performance and in the meantime people have been clamoring for it to be back. Better to reboot the server every couple weeks I guess. Thanks for your patience everyone!

I've talked to a lot of people about Listology over the years and one decision Jim made early on that works (which I never would have done) is that the lists are completely unstructured. This is one reason our lists are so eclecti - they can be lists with mini-reviews, or just a bunch of text, ordered, unordered, whatever. Personally I would have designed the lists in a much more structured way, so I could aggregate and enumerate them more easily, because I'm a data nerd. However, this would have killed the freedom that has spawned the community and especially the discussion around many lists.

Ultimately all communities grow around their strengths and their ability to bring like-minded people together, and god knows the internet has proven there's plenty of room for everyone. Best of luck to them!

50 Albums I Really Should Get Sometime

On this list there is one stone-cold masterpiece and that is On Fire by Galaxie 500. Probably one of my 10 or 20 favorite albums of all time. Damaged and the s/t Bad Brains album are pretty excellent as well.

Books Read 2006

What I meant was more like what I see right now. The top most viewed is Best Comedy Movies (Rank Ordered) as it will always be. There's one '1001 Books To Read Before You Die' list which for some reason gets 100x more traffic than any of the others. Then there's a group of about 20 lists which cycle around the next spots. Early in the day something may rise up briefly, but over time this pattern of most viewed will always be true (except on occasion when something starts getting particularly good links for a day or two.)

Beyond the top 50 or so its scattered all over the place.

Anyways I'm glad to build this if you want, I could to Most Viewed Of All Time and Most Viewed Today. I'll add it to the list.

It wouldn't be hard, however you can look through the listing on the front page and see the same thing. The most viewed per day exactly mirrors the most viewed of all time. There are about 100 lists with very good Google rank and they always rank at the top.

New ads

You will still get ads, you just won't get the one above lists titles. I might change this though. The fact is most of the site revenue comes from non-logged-in users anyways.

Listology Stability - Site Search temporarily disabled

The good news is that I've determined that the site search software was in fact what has been dragging my server down, I'm sure all the regular users have noticed a marked improvement in site response recently. The bad news is I don't really have a better solution right now. Hopefully more news soon.
