I'm not sure if it's the Japanese cut, but
I do know that the black-and-white fight sequence
towards the end is in color in this version, so
there's quite a bit more bright red blood and gore
flying around, and I also remember the scene as going on for a while more. And you're right about the MPAA- this version is definitely more violent than the American cut, but not by much- I can't imagine anyone who couldn't sit through the uncut version finding the R-rated cut palatable.
Well, if you're going to be obsessed with a filmmaker, Leone isn't a bad choice. I have noticed that more and more people are becoming aware of his work, and I think that's because of DVDs. The visuals are so important in his films that you can't really appreciate them without seeing them under the best possible conditions. I personally used to think
OUATITW was pretty bad until the DVD came out.
No, I didn't. Thanks for catching the gaffe!
Thanks! Actually, I made up the list in large part just based on Criterion dvds that I have yet to see.
All too true.

Once Upon a Time in America (Sergio Leone, 1984)
Kagemusha
Might I suggest City of God (granted the gangsters in that movie are not very well organized)?

Thanks! There always seem to be more, though...
