I luuuv The Chrysalids. I can't believe that it hasn't already been brought to the screen (big and small) by someone. I'd adapt it in a second. It'd be so cheap to produce. Farm locations, simple costumes, no car chases (no motor vehicles) and no need for big-name stars... okay, maybe that's why it hasn't been brought to the screen (big or small.)
NEBULOUS SPOILERS - highlight to read
It has a forbidden love story, a hidden society of noble mutants, children in danger, paranoia, a beautiful mutant girlfriend, farmers versus city-dwellers, generational conflict, mutant plants and animals, torture, father against son, father against mutant son, more paranoia... and some more mutants.
The scene with Sophie's footprint on the rock always gives me chills.
