Rolling Stone 100 Greatest Guitarists
I'm in a band and I've played guitar for 15 years. Some thoughts about the list.
Jimi Hendrix - Slightly Overrated because he died young. belongs on this list but not at the top.
Duane Allman of the Allman Brothers Band - Great player, wouldn't rank him this high though.
B.B. King - If this was the most influential guitar player of all times list, he would probably be number one. Alot of other guitar players are better in my opinion.
Eric Clapton - Should be number one on this list. The man is GOD.
Robert Johnson - Considered a legend by many respected guitarists. His recordings sound horrible, but i guess that's just a product of the times. I'm sure if he were alive today and were able to plug into an amp he would be sick.
Chuck Berry - I'm ok with this ranking, the man can play!
Stevie Ray Vaughan - Should be Number 2 in my opinion. Other than Clapton, no one is better on the guitar. I wish Jack White had been in that helicopter instead of SRV.
8. Ry Cooder - Haven't heard him, but they say he's great.
Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin - I have no problem with this ranking. the man is a legend, wrote some great songs and can rip on the guitar.
Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones - Not a great guitar player. He shouldn't be on this list.
Kirk Hammett of Metallica - Belongs in the bottom 25. Way too high a ranking.
Kurt Cobain of Nirvana - Not a great guitar player, DOES NOT belong on this list.
Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead - Not familiar with his stuff. I like the "high on cocaine" song, but i was never impressed by the guitar work.
Jeff Beck - Great player. Not much listenable stuff though. I don't understand how Jeff Beck can make the list, but Steve Morse, John Petrucci, Steve Vai, Eric Johnson and Joe Satriani Dont. These Rolling stones assholes don't know shit about guitar playing.
Carlos Santana - Very good. Impressive. Great feel player. His singnature PRS guitar is the bomb.
Johnny Ramone of the Ramones - Not a talented guitar player. I once kicked a guy out of my band who had more talent than Johny Ramone. Ranking him number 16 is a travesty.
Jack White of the White Stripes - I would rank this guy number one, that is....if this were the top 100 WORST guitar players of all time. gimme a break!
John Frusciante of the Red Hot Chili Peppers - Good player. Not this good. belongs in the bottom 50.
Richard Thompson - Never heard him.
James Burton - Never heard him.
George Harrison - Great song writer, but Not a great guitarist. ranked way too high..
Mike Bloomfield - Great blues player.
Warren Haynes - good player.
The Edge of U2 - this guy deserves the credit he gets. Not a great soloist, but a true innovater and creator of some of the coolest sounds i've ever heard come out of a guitar amp.
Freddy King - Another early blues player. i'm not too familiar with him.
Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine and Audioslave - This guy is the Number one most OVERRated guitar player of all times. DOES not belong on this list.
Mark Knopfler of Dire Straits - Great player, should be in the top ten.
Stephen Stills - Dont know him.
Ron Asheton of the Stooges - Dont know him.

Steve Cropper of Booker T. and the MG's - Great solo player.
Bo Diddley - Blues innovator, but not this good.
Peter Green of Fleetwood Mac - not this good.
Brian May of Queen - good guitarist, i'm complacent with this ranking.
John Fogerty of Creedence Clearwater Revival - Best guitarist most likely to be found on an 8 track cassette.
Clarence White of the Byrds - Not sure about him.
Robert Fripp of King Crimson - Not familiar, but again, i hear he's good.

Tom Verlaine of Television - Not familiar.
Roy Buchanan - Great blues player.
Dickey Betts - great player, should be higher on this list.
& 60 Jonny Greenwood, Ed O'Brien of Radiohead - Radiohead is a good band, but these guys are hardly impressive on the guitar. another desperate ploy by rolling stone disguise a popularity contest as a talent contest.
Ike Turner - one of the greatest, if you're talking about dudes who kick the shit out of their wives. but if you're talking about guitar playing, he's mediocre at best.
Zoot Horn Rollo of the Magic Band - Dont know him, but with a name like Zoot, how can you go wrong.
Danny Gatton - Dont know him.
Mick Ronson - I think this is the Bowie guitarist who always plays steinberger guitars. If this is him, he can shred big time.
Hubert Sumlin - dont know him.
Vernon Reid of Living Colour - Good player, but i don't understand how he'ranked and so many other superior guitarists are not. oh well.
Link Wray - OK i guess.
Jerry Miller of Moby Grape - nope, dont think so.
Steve Howe of Yes - should be in the top twenty at least, the guy is a wizard.
Eddie Van Halen - Should be in the top five. those assholes at rolling stone are on crack.
Lightnin' Hopkins - Early blues player, dont really know him.
Joni Mitchell - not impressive.
Trey Anastasio of Phish - he's pretty good, i wouldnt put him any higher though.

Adam Jones of Tool - I love tool, but this dude doesn't solo. he's a great songwriter though.
Ali Farka Toure - Can't comment.
Henry Vestine of Canned Heat - I love Going to the Country, but what the hell is so special about his guitar work.
Robbie Robertson of the Band - wrote some great movie scores - e.g. "color of money".
Cliff Gallup of the Blue Caps - Not familiar.
Robert Quine of the Voidoids - I'm not a matthew sweet fan.
Derek Trucks - decent player.
David Gilmour of Pink Floyd - I think the guitar mind behind pink floyd should be a little higher, don't you?
Neil Young - I don't understand this. he is a horrible guitar player. so sloppy. why?
Eddie Cochran - i don't know.
Randy Rhoads - he was a virtuoso. shoulbe be in the top 25, at least.
Tony Iommi of Black Sabbath - wrote some amazing riffs, but not a great soloist.

Dave Davies of the Kinks - I like van halen's version of "you really got me" better.
D. Boon of the Minutemen - Can't comment.
Glen Buxton of Alice Cooper - He's OK.
