Seconding Cassavetes and Ozu and Bresson! Check out A Woman Under The Influence and Late Spring and Au Hasard Balthazar.
Another suggestion is the short film maker Bruce Conner (although he's much harder to come by than anyone else on this list)
I've seen A Woman Under the Influence and Au Hasard Balthazar but that's all I've seen from either! Any other recommendations?
Ozu in color is really a beautiful thing. I'd highly recommend Autumn Afternoon & End of Summer. Maybe his stories are a little quaint, but he was a master visual stylist/editor, and watching his films is like drinking a fine wine!
