- Ted Williams-Originally deferred from military service in 1941 on the grounds that his mother was a dependent, Williams took a great deal of heat from the public for being a perceived dodger. He would soon sign on on his own accord, spending 3 years learning to fly for the duration of the war.

A gifted marketer first and foremost, he sold football to mainstream America through the use of television, making autumn Sundays practically synonymous with football. First nonathelete to with Sports Illustrated Sportsman of the Year. Baseball had six commissioners during his tenure.

For centuries, men had played cricket, rounders, and various other games featuring bat and ball. However, if you're going to point to one man who truly set the wheels of baseball in motion, that man is Alexander Cartwright. Cartwright was a bank teller and volunteer firefighter, who for many years had played various ball games around the parks in New York City.
