Our Rescue

and he licked the trickle until the stitches.
Then another bitch punched her teeth into his neck
and four bullet holes filled with blood.
Chasing a rabbit, he ruptured a disc
and lay four weeks to heal.
When another disc went,
we crossed state lines for the knife.
On the day he rose again to scoop himself a drink,
it was joy pure and simple.
