Spoiler Alert! - Clicking on a link for a film was has been chosen by the LMC could result in scenes, plot points and suprises being ruined for you. Please keep the nomination and voting phases spoiler free.

LMC003: [Vote]
LMC002: Barton Fink (1991)
LMC001: Taxi Driver (1976)

Welcome to the LMC (Listology Movie Club)!

Currently the LMC Members are: aaa, buber, dgeiser1, jblack, jenhowel, kbuxton, saka, sebreg

Anyone can jump in at any time during the nomination, voting, watching or discussion process. Don't be shy! We need more participants.

The current incarnation of LMC does not move forward based on any given schedule. Instead it moves forward based on the interest of the participants. During the nomination phase please limit yourself to three nominees. After at least nine films have been nominated a voting phase will take place. During the voting phase any film which gets three votes will be made the movie for that LMC and the process begins again. Feel free to watch and discuss any film for any LMC at any time. Hopefully this will keep things moving at a nice clip.

What do you think the voting by genre is going to accomplish? I think it just confuses the issue, especially since movies are listed in more than one genre. It also doesn't take into account weights between genres. For example I generally won't want to watch many action movies (I'm VERY sqeamish), etc.

Primarily voting by genre will take a 41 item nomination list and pare it down somewhat. If we had 42 people participating in the LMC I don't imagine this would be an issue. As it is we have 8.

If I take the top (one or two) vote getters in each genre and make a second voting ballot with that the chances that we'll actually get a movie to watch (by majority) is increased.

I recommend if you don't wish to watch a war movie then don't vote for a war movie in the final ballot.

I think the chances of a war film actually being the majority are quite slim.

Again, I solicited suggestions from all interested parties and only saka cast her vote for my idea of voting along genre lines to pare down the list. If anyone had better ideas they were more than welcome to bring them forth.

I apologize if my ideas, implementation, etc. were imperfect but I tried my best!

Gotcha. That part makes sense. I guess I hadn't read your original description of the polls carefully enough. My only suggestion for an alternative wouldn't work technically with the way jim's got this stuff working right now which would be to put all of the movies in a list and be able to vote on your top 5 (or 10) or whatever and then whichever ones receive the most votes from that list would become the pared down poll. Several of the polls had quite a few movies I wanted to see whereas others didn't have any.

Again, just a different idea.

And even though the war/action type movies aren't my thing I'll make an effort to watch all of the movies that get voted in case they surprise me by being good :)

I think you did a fine job. My thinking is the top vote getters can always be included in future polls. Eventually most of them will be watched.

I want to see something I haven't seen before so this voting system works just as well as any other.

random idea: it might be neat to have a poll for each movie that gets chosen so people could vote on how they'd rate the movie (# of stars, thumbs up-thumbs down, or whatever).

great idea, kristin! i'll see what i can do. anyone have any additional comments?

I like Kristin's idea. I'm up for anything you decide to do, you fucking genius!! ( I mean that..)

before i move forward i'd like to take the time to solicit feedback from all interested participants.

lately i've been having some doubts about the viability of the LMC. the interest in LMC wasn't exactly overwhelming in the first place. but because of jblack's insistence i went ahead anyway. this is not meant as a slight on jblack.

i thought LMC001 went really well. great nominations, voting and discussion. we had 9 people cast votes on the final LMC001 ballot which I think was a great turnout.

then came LMC002. lackluster nomination process. so-so voting and the final ballot only had 4 votes total. i don't know how many people will end up watching Barton Fink. that remains to be seen.

anyway, i spend a fair amount of time keeping an eyes on things and trying to make everything is svelte as possible. but i feel things could be going smoother somewhat. some of the concerns I have...

1) too much time between movies. with Taxi Driver it seemed like everyone was done talking about it within the first week. that left 3 more weeks dedicated to Taxi Driver with nothing else left to say (although i still have yet to post my comments)

2) complicated nomination process. it seems like everyone doesn't feel like renominating movies every time. there's gotta be a better way to this.

3) complicated voting process. my main issue here is too many ballots. the ultimate way to do this would be for each person to vote for the film they most wanted to see. and then the film they second most wanted to see and so on. scores could be assigned appropriately and I think a winner could be chosen on one ballot, with maybe a run-off if necessary. unfortunately the current polling system does not support something of this nature.

Issue i wish could be addresses:

1) Participation - Does everybody want to be doing this?

2) If so do we wish to compress the movie chedule. Another idea I had was making it more free form. no set watching or discussion schedule. every 2 weeks (or so) a worthwhile film rises to the top and of the clatter and it is designated LMC00X. people can watch LMC00X at their leisure and comment at their leisure.

3) feedback on nomination process. another idea i had here was setting a flat number of nominees per person (5 maybe) and having the nominee list pass from one LMC round of voting to the next. this way people wouldn't have to keep renominating the films they are interested in and they would also take more time with their choices.

4) feedback on voting process. sort of self-explanatory but i don't have any additional thoughts yet.

your thoughts are appreciated!!! :-)

Limit peoples nominees to three movies a piece and after each round of voting take out titles that do not get votes.

I definitely don't think you should give up after just one month. Getting the movies too close together would probably get me to drop out since I don't watch that many movies as it is. Perhaps 2 movies a month, but no more frequent than that...

Other than that, I'll let you know if I have more suggestions

I take it we're giving up? Since according to the schedule we should be watching #3 right now?

Kristin, I guess I sort of have things in a holding pattern right now. There was only 1 comment posted about Barton Fink which doesn't bode too well for continuing this process. My girlfriend just got out of the hospital after getting chemo for leukemia so I haven't been paying as close attention as I should have. I'd like to make the process flow a little more smoothly and asynchronously but I haven't had a chance to put it all together. I'll try to get something going by the end of the week.

Alrighty then...I have rethought the tenets of the Listology Movie Club and updated the LMC Home page accordingly. Please post comments and re-nominate films for LMC0003!
