What does the "Alive" category mean? Not sure where to classify them?
Before you re-classified Greatest Living Directors as alive-and-active I had started working on this list. Those listed as Alive only are still alive but are no longer directing.
Doesn't Spike Lee need to be somewhere on this list? Also Wes Anderson? The Hughes Brothers?
Overall a very nice job, I would put Scorcese in the still good camp and I might be able to make an argument for a few more selections but it is a great list and classification.
Yes, yes, and yes! That's why I asked for recommendations because I knew for sure I'd miss some. :-) Thanks!!!
Well Dan..obvious I'd make a comment or two about this original and neat list. What is the difference between good and ok? Is ok like good and good like great? I know, I'm nit picking. Well.. interesting overview. I did not see my man Nicolas Roeg on here. Did I miss him or did you? I did not know Mike Figgis directed so many movies. what he has done that I've seen, I must say, is brilliant. Bernardo Bertolucci I dn't think ever made a bad movie. Oh wait, he did 1900 didn't he?
Hey, Jeff! I'll add Nicolas Roeg first chance I get.
As far as the difference between good and OK goes; on my rating scale a good movie gets a 7 (or better) and merely OK movies is a 5 or a 6 and a 4 or below is a bad movie. In the case of what type of movies a director currently makes I looked at the average ratings for their few movies and see what rating it falls around and that's how I categorize them.
For a director to be categorized as still directing movies he/she either must have directed a film released within the last 2 years or have a future film schedule for release.
So let's see how that applys to Nicolas Roeg...
The last movie that he directed was called The Sound of Claudia Schiffer (2000). It was a short film (18 minutes) but still keeps him active as it was released within the last 2 years. The IMDB ratings for his films in the 90s range from 6.65 for The Witches down to 5.12 for Cold Heaven firmly placing him in the OK category. And since he's directed 10+ films he fall in that category.
To be honest I'm not trying to be too opinionated or scientific here, I am just trying to give a quick and dirty overview of the directorial landscape.
Sounds good to me.
I need to see The Man Who Fell To Earth again. I've seen it plenty of times, however, its the only movie in my top ten I have not written a review about. I know the story and the movie pretty well, I just need to brush up on it.
I've seen it once and thought it was great. Have you seen Track 29?
I gotta suggest some comedy directors (such an ajdagreat thing to do!) :)
Jerry Zucker, Jim Abrahams, David Zucker
Barry Sonnenfeld
Blake Edwards
Stanley Donen
John Hughes
Harold Ramis
That's it. Consider 'em!
And John Landis. And Ivan Reitman. :D
Thank you!
