Hey, thanks for compiling this! I do think the 90s were a good decade for movies (I think it can legitimately vie for the title with the 50s and 70s), but I also think you need to correct for what a short memory people have. As a frequent victim of the recency effect, I can attest to its power. Of course, I have no idea what kind of "correction" would be fair.
yes, i know there is a tendency to value more recent things. actually i'm being kind of facetitious in my use of these stats. i think 20 years from now we'll be better able to tell how the 90s stand out from the other decades. if anyone wants to wait that long i'll still be here.
:-)
from a realistic standpoint the 80s were horrible as far as quality films go. i think the 90s were a backlash (of sorts) to that. the blockbuster elements were still there (studios out to make gobs and gobs of money) but a lot of smaller story-driven filmmakers rose out of the ashes of the 80s. i think the oughts (00s) might actually turn out to be a continuation of this trend. i sure hope so because i don't want to see a return to the dog days of the 80s.
I was a teenager through most of the 80s, and my taste was even worse then than it is now. So I coasted through, blissfully ignorant of what a wasteland it was. Now that I know a bit better, I too hope we don't have a repeat.
Actually, I wanted to check on the 80s before posting this, so I turned to jblack's "In This Year" series. From a quick glance, it looks like the 80s actually started off okay (70s momentum, perhaps), but then went downhill.
