X-Men Psychoanalyzed!

Yes, I am a confirmed Freudian when it comes to pop culture, but the depiction of Jean Grey in X3: The Last Stand is troubling. When she emerges from the lake still alive but no longer in control of her powers she kills Scott Summers while nearly mauling him sexually, and then Wolverine realizes something is wrong when she ravenously tries to mount him back in her hospital room. Xavier keeps talking about how her power is limitless and she needs to have mental blocks in place to control it, and this idea is represented as uncontrollable destructive power=reckless female sexuality. And then the only way the world can be saved from her "power"? Wolverine has to brutally "penetrate" her with his claws, killing her. You may think me crazy, but it's there...Any thoughts?

Holy shit. That's really quite good; as much as I love analyzing, I never would've come up with that theory in a million years.

While I'd say that it probably wasn't the filmmakers' intention, it is still presented in the film, and makes for an interesting study. Though I don't know how much I would trust in the Dark Phoenix depicted in The Last Stand; they really fucked up that storyline.

Thank you. Yeah, overall the film wasn't as good as the first two, and the ending left a lot to be desired.

Freud has had a profound impact on modern popular art. You can pretty much tell whether or not something is modern art by counting the number of phallic symbols.

So true--although art pre-Freud also has its share of phallic and womb symbols--sexual undercurrents are rampant!
