What's Cooking?
2000 LGF
This film chronicles four regular families in Los Angeles on Thanksgiving Day living in the same neighborhood, not really knowing eachother.
One family is upper class Republican African American, one family is first generation Viet Nameese owning a video shop, one is an older Jewish couple whose lesbian daughter brings home a lover, and one is a Latino family having to adjust when the father has left the home.
This movie is about real love, real community, real Americans and the real way we experience food together on our stressful holiday. The women in this film are not sex objects. They are mothers, daughters, grandmothers, lovers, and sisters. It was so refreshing to see a movie that reminded me of my real experience of going to the store and hearing 15 launguages. (I grew up near San Francisco)
This European director has great promise...I only wish I wrote it doen before I returned the DVD!
