What Independent Films Did You Want To See, But Never Played At Your Local Cinemas?

I've just read the Ask The Critic section in Entertainment Weekly, and Owen Gleiberman posts his answer to a question he posed a few weeks back: What indie movies did readers want to see, but never arrived? It startled me that films I thought were on wide release, such as Mystic River, Lost in Translation, even A Mighty Wind didn't screen in such places as Richmond, VA or Columbus, OH. I live in Asheville, NC, a growing big town/small city that prides itself on its diverse local arts scene. 2003 was also the first year of the Asheville Film Festival. The Cooler premiered here, and Ang Lee submitted a film for the festival. The Fine Arts cinema has, in 2003, shown such films as American Splendor, Dirty Pretty Things, Swimming Pool, The Magdalene Sisters, The Good Thief, The Cooler and Thirteen, just to name a few. But I would have most liked to have seen City of God. Pity it never played here. So, in the spirit of EW's article, I thought I'd ask you to name some independent films you would have like to have seen, but they never played at your local theatres. Also, if you don't mind, tell me where you live as well. Thanks for playing!

I'm with you. Last year, the film I waited for and waited for and waited for and finally realized just wasn't coming was City of God. dgeiser13 loves it, and he doesn't seem to be alone.

DVD in February, I hear...

Shalom, y'all!

There's a terrific video store in town called Segrof Video, which specializes in independent & foreign films as well as popular releases. I'll have to rent City of God from them when it comes out.

The movie theater 7th-closest to my house is a great art house called the Charles, but I also really appreciate that the 2nd-closest theater has begun showing some smaller films.

I still think that "City of God" didn't come around to either theater, or if it did, it didn't stay very long. "Elephant" came to the Charles but stayed only for the blink of an eye; luckily, I caught that one in Florida.

Now I'm just being greedy, but I really wish "Gigantic: A Tale of Two Johns" had been playing near me. Of course, that's an extremely small movie.

Gigantic: A Tale of Two Johns was actually playing at a theater near where I worked at home. I didn't get a chance to go - it wasn't there very long, but I wanted to see it. I was really shocked it was playing at all, though.
