What I'm Listening to Today: 1/27/04

Elvis Costello - "North" - 7:30 A.M. - *YAWN* I've been wanting to know who this "Elvis" person is, so I saw this album on the "new CD" rack at my library and picked it up. BORING. What is this, his attempt at classic jazz and/or crooning? Is his music normally like this or is this a vain attempt at performing an older style of music, the same attempt made by Rod Stewart in his American Songbook series?? I'm trying to force myself to make it to the end of the CD. Nope, not gonna make it. SORRY! On to the next CD.

Tina Turner - "Simply the Best" - 7:50 A.M. - Chic with Attitude, Powerful Woman, Confident Gal. That's what Tina is, and it shows in her music. First track is "Simply the Best." I can't help but imagine Vitali Klitschko walking out to the boxing ring with this song playing in the background. Anyway, Tina Turner ROCKS. I don't have to try to describe what her music is like because I'm sure most of you know. This is a great compilation of some of my favorite Tina songs: "Better Be Good to Me," "What's Love Got to Do With It." Of course there is my all time favorite Tina hit: "We Don't Need Another Hero," of Mad Max fame. And them some others that are less well known to me that I really get into: "I Can't Stand the Rain." There are of course a few pits in the the bowl of cherries, and for me, that would be her "River Deep" which is an oldies song and I'm not a HUGE fan of oldies. I can tolerate them but don't actively listen to them. This is a great compilation to own and as expected has a little of everything from over the years. Tina Turner is one of my heroes from the 80's. I'll never forget her awesome role in Mad Max Thunderdome. She's a Queen Diva with a sexy husky voice.

Gothic Vampires From Hell - 1:10 P.M. - I was in the mood for some atmospheric music so I popped in the second CD of a Gothic music set my best friend bought me. This is a tantalizing little feast of creepy instrumental music and sound effects. Instead of nature sounds for relaxation, I'm using horror sounds. It's a very calming, dreamy aural combination of ethereal synthesized instrumentation and background sounds like whispers, narraration, chanting, even screams and cackles. It's 1:54 P.M. now and I want to go to bed. Not that this music is boring, it's just so darn relaxing, almost hypnotic. I am on the verge of a trance-like state.

Lesson number one for music fans - When you hear of an acclaimed, legendary artist, do NOT go try the latest album. This is begging for confusion and disappointment.

I've learned this lesson the hard way so many times when I was younger. :)

I like North (and I cringe at the comparison to Stewart's latest albums, which I really don't like), but no, it is not at all typical of Costello's work. Try This Year's Model. You might not like it, but boring, it ain't.

Good luck!

Shalom, y'all!
