TREAT OF THE WEEK - No.19
Here is a treat for you - VAN DER GRAAF GENERATOR
A Plague Of Lighthouse Keepers - Part ONE (9m 17secs)
A Plague Of Lighthouse Keepers - Part TWO (4m 59secs)
A Plague Of Lighthouse Keepers - Part THREE (9m 13secs)
If you liked that, here are a few more:
The Undercover Man   - from the album 'Godbluff', this is also on the Godbluff DVD
Arrow   - from the album 'Godbluff'.
Whatever Would Robert Have Said   - from the album 'The Least We Can Do Is Wave to Each Other'.
Darkness 11/11   - from the album 'The Least We Can Do Is Wave to Each Other'. Check out my own recording of Darkness 11/11 during their 2005 reunion tour.
LOST   - This is just a snippet of one of my top five VDGG songs, it is a rare and incredibly moving love song. Unfortunately there are no complete videos of this song because they rarely play it live. This clip shows them again with no guitars, just keyboards, drums, sax and vocal. This comes from the album 'H to He Who Am the Only One' (which means 'Hydrogen to Helium' - nuclear fission).

A Plague Of Lighthouse Keepers is their magnum opus from the album Pawn Hearts - it takes up the whole of side two at 22 minutes, but is split here into three parts because YouTube will allow only a maximum of 10 minutes (approx) per video. Although it is one piece of music, it comprises of ten sections, and therefore does lend itself to splitting up into parts. As listed on the album: (a) Eyewitness, (b) Pictures/Lighthouse, (c) Eyewitness, (d) S.H.M., (e) Presence of the Night, (f) Kosmos Tours, (g) (Custard's) Last Stand,
(h) The Clot Thickens, (i) Lands End (Sineline), (j) We Go Now. This version is recorded live in a Belgian TV studio, and can be found on the 'Godbluff' DVD.
Their classic line-up consists of:
Peter Hammill on piano/keyboards, guitars and vocals (composer of most of their songs/lyrics).
Hugh Banton on keyboards - and pedal bass. Although he keeps a fairly low profile, he is perhaps a driving force behind the band musically / instrumentally).
David Jackson on saxophone(s) and wind instruments.
Guy Evans on drums/percussion.
Also, on bass guitar in a couple of these clips can be spotted Nic Potter
Often regarded as their best albums, and certainly my own favourites are :
Pawn Hearts, (1971).
Still Life (1976)
Check out also my own recordings of Van Der Graaf Generator during their 2005 reunion tour, which I recorded live at the Bridgewater Hall in Manchester on Sunday 13th November. "Darkness"
"Masks"
"Childlike Faith In Childhood's End" (part one)
"Childlike Faith In Childhood's End" (part two)
