Some of the greatest guitar/bass tones ever recorded
In no particular order....
-Eric Clapton "Sunshine of Your Love"
A hollow, gritty sound with just the right amount of breakup. E.C.'s solo tone is the stuff of legends.
-Kurt Cobain "Bleach"
The epitome of a cheap guitar turned up way too loud. Reckless. Urgent.
-Patrick O'Hearn (I think) "Valley Girl" by Frank Zappa
Classic Fender Precision thru an Ampeg SVT. The bass line stomps it's way through the song like Godzilla crushing Reseda beneath his massive scaly feet. Filthy and obnoxious.
-The Damned "New Rose"
The violent squall of guitar and amp on the verge of collapse. This is what punk rock guitar should sound like.
-J. Mascis "Whatever's Cool With Me"
J's Marshall and Jazzmaster sounds as messy and unkempt as J himself, but when the solo kicks in his wistful stonerisms send the song sky high.
-Brian May "Crazy Little Thing Called Love"
All of Brian's work is pretty much gold. But the lead in this song is especially tasty.
-Eddie Van Halen "Mean Street"
Snarling, snotty ROCK tone. The intro with it's otherworldly screech and howl gives me goosebumps. EVH at his peak of badassery.
-Jimmy Page "Fool in the Rain"
The capabilities of the MXR Blue Box fully realized. Everything about the solo in this song is so over the top and silly it made me realize he's a genius.
-Geddy Lee "Vital Signs"
Solid, gritty thump with plenty of balls. While Geddy's tone is aggressive, his playing is so confident and articulate that it makes it not stupid.
-Jimi Hendrix "Band of Gypsys"
Much has been written about Jimi and his music. But this album says all you need to know about his guitar tone.
-Keith Richards "Sympathy for the Devil"
What's he using for a pick? A razor blade? Probably.
-Scott Hill "Evil Eye" by Fu Manchu
I don't know what kind of fuzzbox he's using, but it sounds like Blue Cheer getting vomited on by Black Sabbath ...only louder.
-Billy Gibbons "Just Got Paid"
Tone so dirty I wanna wash my hands after hearing it.
-Joe Walsh "Funk #49"
Joe wielding his Drunk-o-caster with zeal. Every time I pick up a Tele I play this lick. Cool as shit.
-Jon Spencer "Bellbottoms"
Some 60's junker (Tiesco?) played thru a bass amp!
There are many others.....I'm sure I'll think of more. Feel free to add.
