Rochester's High Falls Film Festival

I remember a discussion a few months ago about how not many women are mentioned in our favorite director lists. I only have two on my list, simply because I haven't run across or heard of many by women. Yet, I hope to add to my list after Rochester's High Falls Film Festival on Oct. 30-Nov.3, which highlights films by women directors and other women behind the camera. I particularly want to see writer/director Karen Moncrieff's Blue Car, Kathryn Bigelow's Near Dark, Rebecca Miller's (Arthur Miller's daughter) Personal Velocity, and Lucy Darwin's documentary about the making (or, rather, the distastrous unmaking) of Terry Gilliam's project Don Quixote (Orson Welles first spent two decades trying to turn the classic novel into film) in Lost in La Mancha .

Yeah, there aren't too many prominent female directors. Mira Nair would have to be my favorite female film director with MONSOON WEDDING, MISSISSIPPI MASALA and the not so good KAMA SUTRA. She also did something called SALAAM BOMBAY (which is supposedly quite good) but I never did get around to seeing that one. Her next project VANITY FAIR, excites me very much, however. Maybe that will push her over the edge and onto my best director's list. MONSOON WEDDING was sure a good start.

Thanks for the name. I'll have to check her work out.
