Oh damn, I saw this list of Michael Stipe's top 10 albums once, but now I can't find it. I'm pretty sure it had Patti Smith's Horses, Gang of Four's Entertainment!, and Wire's Pink Flag. Other than that, I can't remember. Did anyone else see this?

Perhaps you are talking about this brief article in the March 2004 Spin magazine:
http://www.spin.com/features/magazine/2004/03/life_music_michael_stipe/

They are:
1. Patti Smith - Horses
2. Television - Marquee Moon
3. Wire - Pink Flag
4. Velvet Undergound - The Velvet Underground & Nico
5. New York Dolls - New York Dolls
6. Gang of Four - Entertainment!
7. Colossal Youth - Young Marble Giants
8. Suicide (first album)
9. Boogie Down Productions - By All Means Necessary
10. Grant Lee Buffalo - Fuzzy
