In a rare moment of Friday evening spontaneity (rare because I usually have my weekends planned for me) I saw the film U571. I was expecting an evening of relatively mindless escapism. Instead I saw a tense, well-written, well-acted WWII submarine drama. The film had a few flaws, but over all a pleasant surprise.

That's good to hear. My brother-in-law quoted a review that described it as Little Das Boot That Could. And while that statement was tongue-in-cheek, I think the review was generally positive.
Yes it was a surprise.
I had the same experience. I only went because a friend who hates action films recommended, which shocked me. The high quality of the film shocked me more. Glad it became something of a sleeper.
Shalom, y'all!
