1. 5/1: Casablanca (1942, Michael Curtiz) - I really can't believe that I, a self-proclaimed film buff, had never seen the masterful Casablanca up until now. I've heard some people say that it doesn't quite live up to the hype, but that is a complete falsity. Michael Curtiz has crafted a great piece of cinema, supported by outstanding performances and an even more outstanding screenplay (a screenplay that wasn't even finished when principal photography started). The script is very witty and original, filled with memorable and oft-quoted lines. Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman are just...just superb as Rick Blaine and Ilsa Lund, the two ex-lovers whose relationship is at the forefront of this marvelous little tale. Paul Henreid also turns in a memorable performance as Victor Laszlo, the European Resistance leader hiding out in Casablanca. When the final frame fades, you'll not want to stop watching. A must-see. A+
