- What I Got
- P.D.Q. Bach - New Horizons in Music Appreciation ~ I hadn't thought about PDQ Bach since we sang his (her? their?) classical music parodies in high school choir. (There's nothing quite like a choir singing barnyard sounds in harmony to really staid music.) The "play by play" commentary reminded me of a similar scene at the end of Woody Allen's Bananas.
- Abdel Ali Silmani - Zeyna ~ If I played this every 8 am, I might be able to skip morning coffee. A little research revealed that it was rai music, which I'd been curious about but never heard.
- Billy Strayhorn - Tailspin ~ I enjoy piano music, but haven't branched out from classical very much–maybe I should?
- Don Byron - Sweet and Gentle ~ Whimsical and fun.
- Maktub - You Can't Hide ~ I really like the combination of earnest lyrics and mellow music here.
- The Golden Gate Jubilee Quartet - Gospel music is something I like to participate in more than hear, I guess (not unlike sports, for me).
- Graham Colton Band - Jessica ~ I had the lyrics to this one stuck in my head for quite a while.
- Sarah Vaughn - The Trolley Song ~ I do like Judy Garland's version, but this more sophisticated version surprisingly rivals it. I need to hear more Sarah Vaughn.
- Gigi - Guramayle ~ I liked the singer's arresting voice–kind of like a more laid-back, African Bjork.
- Sister Rosetta Tharpe - We Shall Overcome ~ See #6.
- Death by Chocolate - Ice Cold Lemonade ~ This reminded me of sixties groups like the Ventures, but like dgeiser, I wasn't sure where to place them.
- The Special AKA - Nelson Mandala ~ I do remember hearing this song, although I didn't recognize it from the title, for some reason.
- Lambert Hendricks & Ross - Caravan ~ Great! Not sure what to make of this song showing up everywhere...
- Robert Bradley's Blackwater Surprise - Trouble Brother ~ I don't listen to blues-infused soul much, but I think I like this. I'll have to give it a few more listens to know for sure.
- The Dmitri Pokrovsky Ensemble - Porushka ~ Russian folk music rules! The only thing missing was a reference to cows. Admittedly, a little goes a long way.
- Poor Righteous Teachers ~ Can You Feel It - I tend to make snap judgments about rap–this I liked.
- Djivan Gasparyan & Michael Brook - Forbidden Love ~ So that's what the duduk sounds like–an answer to a question I never asked, but a good one. Interesting music to cook by.
- Susan Tedeschi - Little By Little ~ A great blues voice, very country-influenced.
- De La Soul - The Magic Number ~ Early rap, this was fun to revisit.
- Heidi Berry - Up In The Air ~ One of my favorites on the mix...
- Buffy Saint Marie - Darling Don't Cry ~ ...and this was probably my least favorite on a first listen, but it's starting to grow on me.
Overall
This was just what I needed to inspire me to venture out a little musically–thank you! What I Gave
Whoever got mine, you know who you are. I wish I'd had more time to put it together, but given the hectic nature of the last two months, I was lucky I got to participate at all. At the risk of pointing out what may be abundantly obvious, I will say there is a metaphor weaving together many of the songs, and an interesting trick of enjambement on the insert.
?'s Mix ~ Like dgeiser, I also got the disc with the mysterious red squiggles and a roman numeral three.
