The ever-changing "1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die"

Tags:

The book's been updated annually since the publication of the 1st edition in 2003 and, clearly having too much time on my hands, I thought a breakdown of the changes so far might come in handy.

Reprint (2004):

Pretty desultory, to be honest, with only two changes. Not wholly convincing, either - these were the two most essential films released in the year between the first two editions?

NB. I originally had this down as the 2nd edition, though in retrospect I don't think it was actually counted as such.

Out:
Adaptation (2002)
Far from Heaven (2002)

In:
The Barbarian Invasions (2003)
Kill Bill, Vol. 1 (2003)

2nd Edition (2005):

14 changes this time out, with most of the casualties coming from the 1990s. Not too many complaints with the choices: most of these always looked to be punching a little above their weight in this company (though I'm sorry to see Audition go). The additions demonstrate a beleated enthusiasm for popular Australian cinema of the 90s alsongside the expected clutch of more recent stuff.

Out:
The Accidental Tourist (1988)
Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992)
Candyman (1992)
The Age of Innocence (1993)
Strange Days (1995)
The Pillow Book (1996)

Attack the Gas Station (1999)
Eyes Wide Shut (1999)
O Brother, Where Art Thou? (2000)
A.I.: Artificial Intelligence (2001)
Chicago (2002)

In:
The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert (1994)
Muriel's Wedding (1994)
Shine (1996)
Lantana (2001)
Hero (2002)
The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002)
Oldboy (2003)
Good Bye Lenin! (2003)
The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003)
Fahrenheit 9/11 (2004)
The Passion of the Christ (2004)
Collateral (2004)
The Aviator (2004)
Million Dollar Baby (2004)

3rd Edition (2006):

14 changes again. 50% of the additions from the previous two editions make a rapid exit; one of the perils, I guess, of list-making on the hoof. In that light, it's debatable how many of this year's rather interesting new entries will survive to the next edition.

Out:
Fast, Cheap and Out of Control (1997)
Tetsuo (1998)
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001)
Gangs of New York (2002)

The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002)
The Barbarian Invasions (2003)
Kill Bill, Vol. 1 (2003)
The Passion of the Christ (2004)
Collateral (2004)
The Aviator (2004)
Million Dollar Baby (2004)

In:
Drowning by Numbers (1988)
The Big Lebowski (1998)
Bus 174 (2002)
The Best of Youth (2003)
Lost in Translation (2003)
Der Untergang (2004)
A Very Long Engagement (2004)
Sideways (2004)
Caché (2005)
Va, Vis et deviens (2005)
Paradise Now (2005)
Brokeback Mountain (2005)
Tsotsi (2005)
The Constant Gardener (2005)

4th Edition (2007):

14 changes again; I guess that's pretty much par for the course now. Most of the casualties come from 2000 and 2001, and a couple of fairly big hitters don't make the cut this time round.

Out:

The Wind Will Carry Us (1999)
Nine Queens (2000)
The Captive (2000)
Ali Zaoua, Prince of the Streets (2000)

Volver (2006)

5th Edition (2008):

18 changes this time out (well, technically 19, since The Return of the King has now expanded to be the whole Lord of the Rings trilogy). 5 of the new entries are actually returnees, having been culled in earlier editions.

Out:

Deconstructing Harry (1997)
Mother and Son (1997)

Atonement (2007)

Thank you for making this list. I'm glad to see that they aren't changing anything on the earlier part of the list, because I've already seen most of those.

Yeah, I think the bulk of the list is safe for the time being; I'm surprised they've been adding stuff as far back as 1988.

How sad to see Lost in Translation and Brokeback Mountain in at the expense of City of God.

Hi, will you be updating with the latest (5th) 2008 edition of the list?

I will do at some point. I'm a bit behind, though - I've not done the 2007 edition yet...

I don't think there is a 2007 edition.. From the 4th edition in 2006 it goes directly to the 5th Anniversary Edition of 2008.. Great job with the change log! I would like to see the latest update too.. :)

There was actually an edition in 2007 (details now added above); I think the discrepancy is because what I was counting as the 2nd Edition wasn't actually intended as such.
