The Creature is Coming!
Star in the horror classic to visit Cairo
One of the stars in the 1953 horror classic, "Creature from the Black Lagoon" will be a special guest during the 70th birthday bash for the historic Zebulon Theater on Saturday, April 15.
The Zebulon has teamed with the Tallahassee Film Society for this special screening of the classic horror film in 50's style 3-D, and all moviegoers will receive a free pair of 3-D glasses, just like the good old days.
The movie will be shown Friday, April 14, and Saturday April 15. Show times are 7:30 and 9:30 p.m. on Friday, 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, and then 7:30 and 9:30 p.m. Saturday night. Admission is $5.50 for adults and $3.50 for children and senior citizens.
Ginger Stanley Hallowell, who appeared in the movie as the swimming double for Julie Adams, and holds an underwater world's record, will make a live guest appearance at the two Saturday evening screenings. She also appeared in the sequel to the creature, "Revenge of the Creature," which premiered in 1954.
Ms. Hallowell, a resident of Orlando, has appeared in numerous TV and print advertisements, in addition to her career in films.
"We are excited to have Ms. Hallowell come to Cairo to help us celebrate this milestone in the history of our community theater," Regional Community Center Chairman Kermit Gilliard said.
"The Creature from the Black Lagoon" is the story of a web-footed humanoid, gilled man who terrorizes a small expedition party traveling up the Amazon River.
Some of the scenes of the movie were filmed at nearby Wakulla Springs, and a lifeguard there, Ricou Browning, played the role of the creature when the actor originally hired decided he didn't like sharing the springs with alligators. Browning went on to a successful Hollywood career as a writer.
This will be the first joint venture between the Tallahassee Film Society and the Zebulon. Chairman Gilliard hopes it is the start of a long and fruitful relationship.
"We are so appreciative of the participation of the Tallahassee Film Society in helping us celebrate the Zebulon's birthday. We hope this is just the start of many great future events," Gilliard said.
Another highlight of the Zebulon's birthday bash will be special guest appearances by nationally recognized motocross stars Davi Millsaps, Martin Davalos and Bryon Johnson. All three of these AMA Supercross Lites riders train in Grady County and list Cairo as their hometown in national racing events.
Many local youth and adults, too, are fans of the motocross stars and Gilliard encourages everyone to take advantage of seeing these racing stars in person during the Zebulon birthday party on April 15.
A street festival atmosphere will be created by blocking 2nd Ave. N.W. between Broad Street and the Regional Community Center for the day-long party.
Live entertainment presented by dancers from South Georgia Performing Arts, the Magnolia Squares, performances by "Elvis" and "Annie," foot-tapping selections by Blue Holler Blue Grass Band, Lauren Strickland, and a Scrap Metal Band and dancers from Off Broadstreet are sure to entertain all partygoers.
The special entertainment begins at 1:15 p.m. and will run throughout the day until 6 p.m.
At 6:30 p.m. "Happy Birthday" will be sung and plenty of birthday cake will be cut and served to everyone in attendance.
Ms. Ginger Stanley Hallowell will begin signing autographs at 6 p.m., then she will make some brief remarks between th 7:30 and 9:30 showing of Creature.
Zebulon birthday bash organizers are still soliciting vendors for the street festival. Already signed up tp participate are Gordon Heights Baptist Church, which will be selling lemonade and conducting a yard sale; Dennis Jones, who will be selling fresh, hot BBQ; Sarah Billingsley, who will be selling homemade jewelry; and the Cairo Kiwanis Club, which will be selling pizza.
Vendor space can be rented for $25 for an outside space or $45 for a space inside the Regional Community Center.
If you are interested in participating as a vendor call 229-377-3191.
