_The 100 Best Films of All Time (39-35)
39. Annie Hall

Director: Woody Allen
Cast: Woody Allen, Diane Keaton, Tony Roberts
Genre: Comedy
Academy Awards: 4 (including Best Picture)
Year: 1977
Imdb-Rating: 8.3
Critic's opinion (Brian Koller):
"Annie Hall" is a very good comedy about relationships, from a realistic rather than romantic viewpoint. The film has many quirky and original comic techniques, all of which work. While not Allen's best film ("Manhattan" is even better), its strict focus on relationships, its accessiblity, and its originality make it his most popular.
38. The Graduate

Director: Mike Nichols
Cast: Dustin Hoffman, Anne Bancroft, Katharine Ross
Genre: Comedy
Academy Awards: 1
Year: 1967
Imdb-Rating: 8.1
Critic's opinion (Brian Koller): "The Graduate" is a good comedy that has generally been over-rated over the years. While the film launched Dustin Hoffman's career, it is by no means his best film (my bets are on "Little Big Man"). Most of the humor works, which admittedly is the point, but the characters of Hoffman and Ross lack consistency and motivation.
37. E.T.- The Extra-Terrestrial

Director: Steven Spielberg
Cast: Henry Thomas, Dee Wallace-Stone, Drew Barrymore, Peter Coyote
Genre: Sci-Fi
Academy Awards: 4
Year: 1982
Imdb-Rating: 7.7
Critic's opinion (Laura Clifford): Yet for all that goes before, "E.T." is still one of those magical collaborations where a director's vision is assisted by people working at their peak including Melissa Mathison (screenplay), Allen Daviau (director of photography), John Williams (score), James D. Bissell (production design) and Carol Littleton (editor). Only the most hardened heart should be able to resist the glow from the one that anchors this classic.

Director: Jonathan Demme
Cast: Anthony Hopkins, Jodie Foster, Scott Glenn
Genre: Thriller
Academy Awards: 5
Year: 1991
Imdb-Rating: 8.5
Critic's opinion (The Phantom): The film is simply excellent and well worth seeing. For phans who haven't yet read Harris' novel, the Phantom recommends that they first see the film, then wait a while and give the novel a try. But if you've already read the novel, see the film anyway, if only to enjoy the film's beautiful and stylish look, Demme's tight and effective direction, and of course Foster and Hopkins' stellar performances. SILENCE is a film to be savored, a true rarity: an "A" picture in a "B" movie genre.

Director: Frank Darabont
Cast: Tim Robbins, Morgan Freeman, Bob Gunton
Genre: Drama
Academy Awards: 0
Year: 1994
Imdb-Rating: 9.0
Critic's opinion (John Ulmer): Like many great films, "The Shawshank Redemption" is one that grows better with age. It was released in 1994, only to gross $18 million dollars. But it was on home video where it found its audience, and on home video where it started to grow -- both in terms of greatness and familiarity. It is on the Internet Movie Database's list of the top 250 films ever made where it stands as no. 2, and it is in the hearts of many where it continues to thrive.

this list has probably the best films of all the lists so far. oh and i rewatched Taxi Driver last night, i still couldn't really get into it but i did like it more than before. Before it got a C- Now its been upgraded to a B
Be sure that Taxi Driver is still going to come in this list.
Did you notice Scorsese's cameos in the film?
No i didn't spot him. but i never knew how good that scene with him and De niro is in the cab, what a tense moment! would you give me a clue as to his where abouts? :-)
Scorsese appears when Travis Bickle for the first time sees Betsy.
Ok, he is not that tall, but I think one can see him.
haha... i was just about to say that this had two of the worst movies on this whole list... nice to see a woody allen movie make it so high up, not the right one in my opinion, but good to see none the less... stardust memories and manhattan are better... and if your wondering silence, ET, and graduate are those two movies.
The Graduate? It is unpardonable not to like that movie :) .
It should have been in the top 10!
haha... i originally wrote three and named three... then i changed my mind on the graduate... and changed the three's to two's but didn't erase graduate... i came to the conclusion it's alright, just overrated, the other two however are bad beyond just the fact they are overrated... genuinely bad
Great to see "Annie Hall" there. Really one of my all-time favorites. A classic. Much better than those new age comedies currently coming out, imho.
I just bought "The Graduate" on DVD for some change I still had left in my pocket, you could say. :) A real bargain. Couldn't pass it up.
'The Graduate' is an excellent comedy. Truly memorable.
