  10. Lost in Beijing- Yu Li (2007, extremely interesting and well-shot movie)
  11. The Truce- Francesco Rosi (1997 if you're interested in the Holocaust, check it out)
  12. Damnation- Bela Tarr- (1988, wow Tarr is amazingly talented)
  13. House of 1000 Corpses- Rob Zombie (2003, demented and entertaining)

  15. The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford- Andrew Dominik (Impressive film!)
  16. The 11th Hour- Nadia Conners (mediocre)
  17. In Bruges- Martin McDonagh (Hysterically funny and quite brilliant)
  18. Kiss of Death- Henry Hathaway (1947, Widmark is fantastic!)
  19. The Devil Came on Horseback- Anne Sundberg and Riki Stern (great doc on darful)

  31. Southland Tales- Richard Kelly (ambitious yet flawed, a promising talent though)
  32. Let the Right One In- Tomas Alfredson (Sweedish, Amazing!)
  33. The Ascent- Larisa Shepitko (Criterion/Eclipse, 1977, powerful amazing film!)
  34. Hukkle- Gyorgy Palfi (2002, experimental Hungarian film, up and coming director)
  35. Bug- William Friedkin (I never like films adapted from the stage, I dislike stage acting)
  36. Seven Samurai- Akira Kurosawa (Criterion, 1954, finally watched it, amazing!)
  37. Out of Balance- Karl Bardosh (2007, good doc on Exxon and global warming)
  38. Nanking- Bill Guttentag (2007, great documentary on the rape of Nanking)
  39. The Great Ecstasy of the Sculptor Steiner- Werner Herzog (1974, documentary about swiss ski-flier)
  40. Fury- Fritz Lang (1936, great film!)
  41. When a Woman Ascends the Stairs- Mikio Naruse (Criterion 1960)
  42. Slumdog Millionaire- Danny Boyle (This was a surprisingly great film, structural presentation of data was great!)
  43. The Painted Veil- John Curran (2006, highly recommend)
  44. The Flowers of St. Francis- Roberto Rossellini (Criterion, 1950 One can feel Fellini all over this)
  45. Sansho the Bailiff- Kenji Mizoguchi (Criterion, 1954, one of the better golden era Japanese films)
  46. How Much Wood Would a Woodchuck Chuck...- Werner Herzog (1976, strange documentary on auctioneer culture)
  47. Son of Rambow- Garth Jennings (2007, charming!)
  48. Valkyrie- Bryan Singer (flat and disappointing, did very little with the times or character)
  49. The Spy Who Came in from the Cold- Martin Ritt (Criterion, 1965, great movie!)
  50. Mimic- Guillermo del Toro- (1997, entertaining and well-done)
  51. L'Enfant- Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne (2005, great film! auteurs!)
  52. Revolutionary Road- Sam Mendes (Winslet is amazing in this!)
  53. White Heat- Raoul Walsh (1949, a noir classic!)
  54. Germany Year Zero- Roberto Rossellini (1948, loved the footage of Berlin)
  55. Heart of Glass- Werner Herzog (1976, engrossing and hypnotic)
  56. Defiance- Edward Zwick (one of the best hollywood WW2 films in awhile. see Come and See for the best Belorussian partisan flick)
  57. The Proposition- John Hillcoat (2005, total sleeper, great film.. written oddly enough by nick cave)
  58. Rocco & His Brothers- Luchino Visconti (1960, one of the better Italian films I've seen)
  59. The Contract- Bruce Beresford (formulaic and average)
  60. Vengeance Is Mine- Shohei Imamura (criterion,1979 absolutely amazing!)
  61. Heaven Can Wait- Ernst Lubitsch (criterion, 1939 I liked this more than I thought)
  62. The Young Lions- Edward Dmytryk (1958, better than most 1950's WW2 films)
  63. The Element of Crime- Lars von Trier (criterion, 1984, amazing film!)
  64. The Public Enemy- William Wellman (1931, wow Cagney is just a freak!)
  65. The Day of the Jackal- Fred Zinnemann (1973, I really enjoyed this)
  66. Le Bonheur- Agnes Varda (criterion, 1965 a rather odd film)
  67. Fat Girl- Catherine Breillat (criterion, 2001 great character study of sexuality)
  68. Ronin- John Frankenheimer (1998, a fun movie)
  69. The Face of Another- Hiroshi Teshigahara (criterion, 1966 this was very intriguing)
  70. Nowhere in Africa- Caroline Link (2002, great characters)
  71. They Died with Their Boots On- Raoul Walsh (1941, suprisingly politically sophisticated)
  72. On the Waterfront- Elia Kazan (1954 loved the cinematography)
  73. For Ever Mozart- Jean-Luc Godard (1996)
  74. Flawelss- Michael Radford (2007, average, not bad)
  75. Cross of Iron- Sam Peckinpah (1977, wow how did I miss this one?!)
  76. The Furies- Anthony Mann (criterion, 1950, dark brooding film)
  77. Youth Without Youth- Francis Ford Coppola (interesting film, out of his usual range)
  78. Fireworks- Takeshi Kitano (1997, japanese)
  79. Mr. Klein- Joseph Losey (1976, reminded me of a retelling of the Trial, lingers in the mind)
  80. Manda Bala- Jason Kohn (2007, good documentary on Brazil)
  81. The Host- Joon-ho Bong (2006, amazing South Korean film)
  82. Next- Lee Tamahori (2007, fun movie)
  83. The Walker- Paul Schrader (2007, I really didn't like this one)
  84. The Andromeda Strain- Robert Wise (1971, great!)
  85. The Steel Helmet- Samuel Fuller (criterion/eclipse, 1951 korean war classic!)
  86. The Reader- Stephen Daldry (Winslet was amazing!)
  87. Radio Days- Woody Allen (1987, haven't seen any of his movies in awhile, enjoyed)
  88. White Squall- Ridley Scott (1996)

  91. My Best Fiend: Klaus Kinski- Werner Herzog (1999, wow kinski was a maniac!)

  138. The Anarchists- Yong-sik Yu (2002, good Korean film about group of anarchists in Shanghai 1920's)
  139. Body of Lies- Ridley Scott (great spy film!)
  140. The Ballad of Cable Hogue- Sam Peckinpah (1970, enjoyable)
  141. Transsiberian- Brad Anderson (great film, Anderson is getting better)
  142. Sukiyaki Western Django- Takashi Miike (2007, poorly conceived film)
  143. Flow: For Love of Water- Irina Salina (2008, a few moments of brilliance)
  144. Noi the Albino- Dagur Kari (2004, Icelandic, excellent!)
  145. The Killing- Stanley Kubrick (1956, amazing!)
  146. The Wrestler- Darren Aronofsky (great but depressing)

  154. Bright Future- Kiyoshi Kurosawa (2004, very odd film)

  156. Joint Security Area- Chan-wook Park (2002, great first Park film)
  157. Halls of Montezuma- Lewis Milestone (1950, solid, Widmark is great as usual)
  158. Traitor- Jeffrey Nachmanoff (surprisingly good, reminds me of shooter)
  159. Untraceable- Gregory Holbit (2008, fun)
  160. Haven- Frank Flowers (2004, decent, editing seemed forced and didn't contribute to film)
  161. We Own the Night- James Gray (this was very well-done)
  162. Interview with the Assassin- Neil Burger (2002, great film, well-done)

  164. Escape from the Planet of the Apes- Don Taylor (1971)
  165. Public Enemies- Michael Mann (amazing! best movie seen in awhile!)
  166. Forgiving Dr. Mengele- Bob Hercules (2006, not very good)
