- Nanking- Bill Guttentag (2007, great documentary on the rape of Nanking)
- The Great Ecstasy of the Sculptor Steiner- Werner Herzog (1974, documentary about swiss ski-flier)
- Fury- Fritz Lang (1936, great film!)
- When a Woman Ascends the Stairs- Mikio Naruse (Criterion 1960)
- Slumdog Millionaire- Danny Boyle (This was a surprisingly great film, structural presentation of data was great!)
- The Painted Veil- John Curran (2006, highly recommend)
- The Flowers of St. Francis- Roberto Rossellini (Criterion, 1950 One can feel Fellini all over this)
- Sansho the Bailiff- Kenji Mizoguchi (Criterion, 1954, one of the better golden era Japanese films)
- How Much Wood Would a Woodchuck Chuck...- Werner Herzog (1976, strange documentary on auctioneer culture)
- Son of Rambow- Garth Jennings (2007, charming!)
- Valkyrie- Bryan Singer (flat and disappointing, did very little with the times or character)
- The Spy Who Came in from the Cold- Martin Ritt (Criterion, 1965, great movie!)
- Mimic- Guillermo del Toro- (1997, entertaining and well-done)
- L'Enfant- Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne (2005, great film! auteurs!)
- Revolutionary Road- Sam Mendes (Winslet is amazing in this!)
- White Heat- Raoul Walsh (1949, a noir classic!)
- Germany Year Zero- Roberto Rossellini (1948, loved the footage of Berlin)
- Heart of Glass- Werner Herzog (1976, engrossing and hypnotic)
- Defiance- Edward Zwick (one of the best hollywood WW2 films in awhile. see Come and See for the best Belorussian partisan flick)
- The Proposition- John Hillcoat (2005, total sleeper, great film.. written oddly enough by nick cave)
- Rocco & His Brothers- Luchino Visconti (1960, one of the better Italian films I've seen)
- The Contract- Bruce Beresford (formulaic and average)
- Vengeance Is Mine- Shohei Imamura (criterion,1979 absolutely amazing!)
- Heaven Can Wait- Ernst Lubitsch (criterion, 1939 I liked this more than I thought)
- The Young Lions- Edward Dmytryk (1958, better than most 1950's WW2 films)
- The Element of Crime- Lars von Trier (criterion, 1984, amazing film!)
- The Public Enemy- William Wellman (1931, wow Cagney is just a freak!)
- The Day of the Jackal- Fred Zinnemann (1973, I really enjoyed this)
- Le Bonheur- Agnes Varda (criterion, 1965 a rather odd film)
- Fat Girl- Catherine Breillat (criterion, 2001 great character study of sexuality)
- Ronin- John Frankenheimer (1998, a fun movie)
- The Face of Another- Hiroshi Teshigahara (criterion, 1966 this was very intriguing)
- Nowhere in Africa- Caroline Link (2002, great characters)
- They Died with Their Boots On- Raoul Walsh (1941, suprisingly politically sophisticated)
- On the Waterfront- Elia Kazan (1954 loved the cinematography)
- For Ever Mozart- Jean-Luc Godard (1996)
- Flawelss- Michael Radford (2007, average, not bad)
- Cross of Iron- Sam Peckinpah (1977, wow how did I miss this one?!)
- The Furies- Anthony Mann (criterion, 1950, dark brooding film)
- Youth Without Youth- Francis Ford Coppola (interesting film, out of his usual range)

- Mr. Klein- Joseph Losey (1976, reminded me of a retelling of the Trial, lingers in the mind)
- Manda Bala- Jason Kohn (2007, good documentary on Brazil)
- The Host- Joon-ho Bong (2006, amazing South Korean film)

- Public Enemies- Michael Mann (amazing! best movie seen in awhile!)
