Watching your list so far, I must say that it is very US-oriented. You have some very fine films listed, but if this is the best of each year? I doubt it. Maybe you should re-title it, my Top ten american films of every year.
Anyway, as far as I can see, you have very good taste, and hopefully your cinematic education will bring you many times on unexplored territory ;-)
The problem is that I only really started watching movies a year ago. And I mean, watching them intensely. So I really haven't seen that many non-US movies yet. But I'm seeing more now. Plus, I only recently found a place that holds many non-US movies. It's hard to find most of them here. Harder than it should be anyway.
This list will probably look a lot different in a year
Nice to see someone opening up to films. I started out pretty much the same as you (film-wise). Wish you luck finding the films you want, and a good time with your discoveries :-)
I'll check your list in the future. Mine is already under reconstruction for over a year now...
Thanks
And I'll check out your list, see if if there's anything I'd want to watch on there
You can do that, but be aware that it is under heavy reconstruction. Beside some additions from last year, the list depicts my tastes from about 3 years ago. The new one which I hope to have up this year will look different. Probably I will use color-encoding like ephender.
I'll wait for the new one then
You've seen a lot of great, great films and I like most of your rankings. But have you not seen Citizen Kane yet? I ask because I didn't see it on the 1941 list.
No, I haven't seen it yet. Don't ask why, I don't have a clue either
I've been meaning to get it
Needless to say, it is essential.
It is so loaded with genius in every scene that repeat viewings prove the film to be critically inscrutable. This makes it very hard to argue with its place as the greatest film ever made.
Needless to say, I recommend it. Strongly. On DVD of course (the VHS version is a piece of shite).
I'll probably have watched it by the end of August. I have a lot of time now anyway.
Good to see you've added Citizen Kane. What did you think of it (other than it was the best film of 1941)?
What qualities stood out for you?
Well, I honestly expected a slightly better movie. It was good, but I expected to be blown away. Maybe my hopes were too high, but I don't think I saw the amazing movie everyone else did.
There were a lot of good qualities, that's true. The acting was great (though I liked Orson Welles more in The Third Man) and the directing and cinematography were great. Most of the problems I had with the movie were in the fact that Kane is profiled to be an incredibly rich person, but every time you see him, I wondered if he really is that rich. The opening news reel showed him as somewhat of a diplomat, it showed him in fancy clothes, surrounded by fancy people. The movie itself just seemed to forget about that introduction.
It's hard to explain it, I guess.
Maybe I just missed something.
If you haven't seen it, I highly recommend 21 Grams. Watch it 2-3 times. It gets more incredible with repeat viewings. The first time I watched it, I was kinda busy putting the pieces together and wasn't confronting the emotions in the film enough to be assaulted by its immense power.
To me, the finest film of the decade so far.
I've seen it, thought it was decent, but I don't think I can bring myself to watching it again.
AfterHours, you should make some movie lists. 21 Grams is one of my 2-3 favorite films of the decade so far, and you're the only other person I've heard with a similar opinion. And if our tastes turn out to be similar on movies, it can't be due to a confounding variable (Scaruffi), since his opinions on cinema haven't influenced me much at all.
I thought he had made some movie lists.
He must've deleted them.
I appreciate the suggestion. I will definitely be making some movie lists in the near future. It is just difficult to find time to seriously attend to both music and film, but I'll get around to it.
In looking at your best films list, our tastes are similar. It seems that, to a certain degree, you've logically matched your films to your music list (2001 = Irrlicht, The Mirror = Rock Bottom, etc.), which is how I often relate to ranking films as well.
For 2009, I have to recommend Moon and Fantastic Mr. Fox. Take a look at those, and see if you might want to revise :P
Still, good choices. I'm going to watch those I have yet to see :D
I've seen Moon. I thought it was good, but not great.
I really want to see Fantastic Mr. Fox, though. I was going to see it last week, but they'd already stopped showing it at the cinema, so I'll have to wait untill it comes out on dvd. Which will probably take several months.
You'll love Fantastic Mr. Fox, especially if you're a big Wes Anderson fan (and you like quirky movies in general).
As for Moon, I have a very special place in my heart for hard science-fiction films (there aren't enough of them IMO), so that may have skewed my opinion of it more towards the positive :D
I know I'll probably love Fantastic Mr. Fox, which is why I don't like that I won't be seeing it for a while.
I can actually understand loving Moon. Part of my disappointment comes from the fact that I'd been hearing everywhere that it was one of the best movies of the year and one of the best sci-fi movies of the last few years. I had expectations and it didn't fully meet them.
But hey, it's your right to love it!
Makes sense - I had no idea what to expect when I watched Moon.
Enjoy Fantastic Mr. Fox when you finally do see it :D
