What did you think of Maya Deren?

I have the same question...

Shalom, y'all!

L. Bangs

I watched only Meshes of the Afternoon, and A Study in Choreography for the Camera.

I don't care much for experimental film. I don't appreciate or understand it, no matter how hard I try. I read the DVD notes. I listen to the DVD commentaries. I read books. I think the Emperor is wearing no clothes.

I see no purpose in it, since I believe the goal of art is communication and expression. Both of those things require an audience. I measure the success of a film by how well I, as the audience, understands what it's saying.

I find Deren's films very expressive and moving, but obviously not all art pleases every appetite.

I do believe most of her films, like many early Buñuel films and those of Stan Brakhage, have a purpose, but it isn't always a coherent narrative. Sometimes, the images and sounds are simply struggling to sidestep logic to elicit a (supposedly) more direct emotional response. The finished product can be analyzed, but usually more on a symbolic or psychological level rather than a narrative one.

Still, there can be good art of that nature and (much more often) bad. I'm guessing you found Ms. Doren in the later category. Her bum luck. ;)

Shalom, y'all!

Maybe I am not receptive to the Maya Deren kind of thing, because I know she's being obscure on purpose. That, to me, seems hostile to the audience. Perhaps I don't like it because it's subversive.

Good idea. But you need better colors. :-)

Can you help me with that? I don't have a hex color code list. I used Webmonkey.com.

Thanks. I changed the orange and green, but the yellow is giving me fits. Do you have a suggestion?
