- Incredible almost spititual telling of cave paintings in southern France. I realize how not exciting that sounds, but you would be wrong./A/9.4

- quaratine clone from South america - interesting and insightful yet lacks the final push or energy to make it a good film!/C-/7.1
- Beyond the Poseidon Adventure (1979)
- A mony grab with B and a few lower A list stars - not really great or horrible - it is just as it is!/C-/7.2
- Where the Sidewalk Ends (1950)
- Film Noir - better than most. This genre is beginning to gain favor - but it is so very black hat vs. white hat./B/8.4
- Duel in the Sun (1946)
- Overplayed, over the top telling of the good boy losing out to the bad boy just to destroy himself. Quite edgy sexually for its time period - tame for today. The last scene is dramatic yet almost laughable./B/8.4
- Muoi (2007)
- Southeast Asian horror movie - delicate, subtle, yet has a small kick to it. Nothing special./B-/8.0
- Suddenly (1954)
- Sinatra in a rather good tense film staged in a little town with the President passing thru./A-/9.0
- Lunopolis (2009)

- Scarlet Street (1945)
- Film Noir concerning nice guy being conned by younger woman!/B-/8.2
- City of Life and Death (2009)
- As simple as possible - the Eastern part of WWII - in this case Japaneese/China conflict - made the majority of the Western part look tame. Millions and I do millions lost their life in these areas - this movie while a definite slanted telling of the "rape" of a Chineese city by the Japaneese army./A-/9.2
- Kansas City Confidential (1952)
- A film noir moral story dealing with a death and the twisted path it presents!/A-/9.0
- Intolerance (1916)
- Four narratives combined in an early/very early film - great for the inovations and creativity - not so much for the acting/story./A-/9.0
- Last Night (1998)
- Six hours left in the world - what would you do - what would anyone do? It is funny, sad, morbid, and at the very heart - human. With so much present material dealing with the end - this really spoke to me./A-/9.2
- White (1994)
- Middle part of the color trilogy - less atmosphere more story - all framed in white. Btw, revenge is a b***h./A-/9.3
- The Game (1997)
- Complex mystery/thriller - seems to be rather predictable, but watch out. Nothing fantastic, but fun ride./C/7.6
- Radio Bikini (1987)
- Documentary on the atomic tests in 1946 and the "cover-up" or carelessness of the US miltary in the purpose, execution, and etc. of these tests./B/8.5
- Bourne Idenity (2002)
- The openining chapter in a rock-in-roll no-holds-barred true American mystery/thriller - the whole thrilogy is a huge personal favorite/A/9.5
- Repulsion (1965)
- Paranoia - madness - gentle slop turns into a fall off a cliff into death./B+/8.8
- Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011)
- In the orginal series - this movie came near the end. The remake is fantastic in execution, faithful to the original in most ways, and makes this more than an afterthought. Smart/perceptive/up-to-date great movie./A/9.4
- Downfall (2004)
- German telling of Hitler's Bunker and the last 12 days - you feel the insanity, the cruelty, and the total complete desperation, but yet you (I) felt sadness for these criminals./A-/9.0
- Tobruk (1967)
- WWII comondo raid on Rommel and his forces in North Africa/B-/8.0
- Red (1994)
- Conclusion to the color trilogy - more redemption story this time framed in red. Weaker than the first two, yet it provides a beautiful series to watch./B/8.6
- Bless the Child (2000)
- Strong points include some interesting temptations placed by evil for the righteous. Negative elements - everything else. Poor attempt at good vs. evil./F/5.5
- Buffalo '66 (1998)
- Inventive, very strange, independent romance? film. Really a matter of taste - I liked it. Miss Ricci plays another unusual role - huge suprise./B/8.4
- Yellowbrickroad (2010)
- A horror film for the thinking crowd. Low budget, independent, thoughtful horror film that may find it difficult to build a following - a matter of taste - love it/loathe it./B+/8.8
- The Scarlet Empress (1934)
- Telling of the ascension of Catherine the Great of Russia. I realize this was suppose to be fantastic, but I only liked the last 10 minutes. The only reason I liked this part was the powerful classical music./D/6.5
- The Dam Busters (1955)
- Rather interesting telling of the creation and application of a British raid in WWII on dams in the Ruhr region./B+/8.9
- Babel (2006)
- powerful, unsetteling story - a must-see./A-/9.2
- 30 Days of Night (2007)
- Fast, gory, rock-n-roll vampire romp - the setting, the intensity, some really good acting (for this genre)make this really an above average horror ride./B/8.5
- Final Destnation 2 (2003)
- Really just a think of a creative way to kill people movie - no plot really, fair acting, effects are decent./C/7.4
- Olympia (1938)
- German (Nazi) vision of the Olympics in Berlin in the 30'3. Sports documentary with a dose of cultural and politics thrown in. This is the Jesse Owens' Olympics and has quite a few shots of Hitler and his pals. Interesting and important for countless reasons./A+/9.8
- The Return of Dracula (1958)
- 50's B Dracula movie - if that is what you want - it delivers./B-/8.1
- I Bury the Living (1958)
- 50's B horror movie - a map and push-pins control the fate of life and death./C-/7.0

- Anti-war movement in WWII by German students. This young woman and her brother could teach everyone a huge lesson about liberty and the price it costs some./A/9.4
- 11/11/11 (2011)
- Poorly done scary movie - very few merits./F+/5.8
- The Cove (2009)
- Environmental/save the dolphins crusade - really needs to be seen by everyone - not just those on the left. It is heartbreaking, cruel, and vastly wasteful of life/resources all in the name of the yen/dollar/euro. When people say get rid of regulation/oversight etc, because people can police themselves - REALLY!/A+/9.7
- Amores Perros (2000)
- Three naratives that bring a dynamic story of hurt, greed, rejection, etc. Not for the kiddies for sure - an adult morale play - excellent./A/9.4
- Dead in Three Days (2006)
- German teen slasher movie - is it better or worse - who knows anymore. It is just as it is./C/7.4
- Contagion (2011)
- Not what I expected - instead a cultural/scientific/mystery story concerning the "plaque". Nothing new about the general idea of the next great pandemic, but handled in a semi-intellectual manner. Some thrills - not many. I really liked it for its approach and delivery - you may/maynot agree!/A/9.5
- The Tourist (2010)
- American version of Anthony Zimmer (French movie) with Depp and Jolie. Lavish, beautiful, even witty - but for my taste not on the same level of the French film. Nothing bad but it could have been sooo much more!/C+/7.9
- Midnight in Paris (2011)
- Lastest Woody allen forte into film - insightful, fun, playful, and quirky. Plays like an European film - with a subtle touch and slow pace, yet it has beauty visually, verbally (in what they say and how they say it), and as always beauty in the lessons we learn. Very good - careful men - it really is a chic flic - don't enjoy it too much./A/9.6
- That Obscure Object of Desire (1977)
- Troubling film - love in its most irrational, cynical, and obsessive form. The beauty covers a deep seated ugliness and maniplative nature of both sexes./B-/8.0
- Quarentine 2: Terminal (2011)
- The first half is rather intense - inside the aircraft. The second half just becomes a moderately ok "jumper" and who/how will the virus spread mystery. As most horror sequels go - better than most./B-/8.0
- HUD (1963)
- Rough, tough modern western with a stellar cast. Paul Newman is great, but HUD really shines in the other actors and the intense play between ethics and recklessness./A/9.4
- Wings (1927)
- Original Oscar winner for best picture - story of WWI and love and friendship lost. Not a fantastic movie, but well worth the effort and viewing/B-/8.0
- Atrocious (2010)
- Shaking camera, total mystery, works well in a very closed and maze setting - does it make sense - maybe - does it make you jump -yep. Blair Witch comparisions will be common, but I thought of the Shinning and the maze./B-/8.1
- In Time (2011)
- Updated Robin Hood tale this version with time as the "gold". Has a lot to say - does it say anything we do not already know. The rich get richer and the poor get poorer (with the help of the rich)./C+/7.8
- Deep Red (1975)
- As basic a scary movie as they come./D+/6.8
- Kind Hearts and Coronets (1949)
- An absolute hoot - British film full of Brit humor and the hoops we will jump thru just to be important; in this case, the hoop would be murder./A-/9.2
- Nietzsche and the Nazis (2006)
- Very, very low budget history/philosophy "lecture" connecting Nietzsche and the Nazis. It is not a movie or even a true documentary - it feels like an intense college lecture. Tons of info, clear presentation, but as entertainment - a definite no. If you want a short class on these two subjects - then a definite yes. I will rate it as a movie./F/5.5 and a semi-documentary/class lecture./B+/8.8
- Courageous (2011)
- Openly Christian challenge to men/Dads to step-up and be "courageous"./B/8.4
- Dekalog (1988)
- Series of films based upon the Holy Bible's Ten Commandments. Sounds very religious but only in the margins. No easy solutions or black/white answers are presented. Life complexities are beautifully presented with all the hurt, joy, confusion, and uncertainity we are all familar with in 'real" life. Each film (abourt an hour each) presents a moral question or challenge. Each film is seperate and stand-alone if desired, but in the collective, this is where the beauty and power are most evident. Very little action, a great deal of introspection and a few constants. A solitary fiqure in 9 who never says a word. The basic setting in an apartment complex. Some characters/or stories will cross over into other stories. I will give my grade for each and then a final grade at the end.
- Dekalog: One (1988)
- A loss of a prized possession. Subtle, tragic, and a great opening. Good./B/8.5
- Dekalog: Two (1988)
- A choice of life or death based upon a chance of life or death - all focused on a person who understands loss. This is an incredible story./A+/9.9
- Dekalog: Three (1988)
- Love and isolation. My least favorite./C/7.5
- Dekalog: Four (1988)
- Unsettling, desperate, questionable, yet still so well told and presented./A/9.5
- Dekalog: Five (1988)
- Anatomy of a murder and a strong plea against the death penalty./B-/8.0
- Dekalog: Six (1988)
- Humilation of another - sickly sad at so many levels./B-/8.0
- Dekalog: Seven (1988)
- Stealing from another to make up for our preceived or real loss. Well done - this one made me furious./A/9.5
- Dekalog: Eight (1988)
- Choices, choices, choices - well presented and written ethical dilemma story. Has the most (but still only a little) openly spiritual elements./A+/9.8
- Dekalog: Nine (1988)
- Trust lost - can it and will it ever be regained?/A/9.6
- Dekalog: Ten (1988)
- Discovered treasure - and the consequences./B/8.6
- Dekalog (1988) - overall rating/A+/9.95
- Wake Wood (2011)
- Blunt force horror/witchcraft film - no subtle touch - no building to a tension filled moment - then BAM./B-/8.1
- Exterminating Angel (1962)
- Mexican social commentary on the nobility's inability to have any real purpose - funny, unforgiving, almost stupid at times - but hard hitting./A-/9.0
- The Thing (2011)
- The Thing (51) was groundbreaking, Carpenter's The Thing (82) was a character driven feast of horror, the lastest is by far the most visual - but it lacks in creativity and character. A good "jump" movie but well short of the other two./C/7.4
- Dream House (2011)
- Big name stars, psycho/thriller, parts better than whole./C+/7.8
- The Double (2011)
- Reveals too much too early - takes the sting out./C-/7.2
- Grave Encounters (2011)
- shaky camera, independent horror/ghost story - good for what it tries to be./B-/8.0
- This is Spinal Tap (1984)
- Incredible, strange, fun take at the world of Rock-n-roll./A-/9.1
- The Dark Knight (2008)
- Intense, brutal - the Batman of the comics. Seeing Ledger as the Joker is beyond surreal - it is horrifying to the 10th degree./A/9.4
- Tales of the Script (2009)
- The story of the screen writer - are you kidding me - it is madness./B/8.4
- The Man with the Golden Arm (1955)
- Sinatra as a herion addict trying to break the addiction. Really intense stuff for the 50's./B+/8.8
- One Week (2008)
- Your young, got the world on a string, and you find out you have terminal cancer. What would you do - are you sure? You may not agree with his choice, but it is strangely uplifting!/A/9.5
- Dad's in Heaven with Nixon (2010)
- All I will say is this is sweet, hurtful, beautiful gift - watch the credits at the end... to ....?/A+/9.8
- The Tree of Life (2011)
- Nature or grace. Part Kubrick influence - part ?. If you want a quasi-spiritual movie or just tired of things blowing up in 3D - you may give this a try. It is visually breathtaking - nominated for best picture Oscar in 2011./?/?
- Last Train Home (2009)
- Chinese film concerning the largest yearly migration of 130 million migrant workers is interesting and heart breaking./B/8.5
- The Grey Zone (2001)
- Severe (even for this subject -WWII concentration camp) story of the brutal life and death and what we might do to live a week longer. DISTURBING./A-/9.0
- Being Elmo (2011)
- Just as it says - the story of the man who is Elmo - from Sesame Street. Totally loved it./A/9.4

- Complete and total shallow/stupid movie./F/3.5
- 2012: Zombie Apocalypse (2011)
- An extremely weak offering in all aspects./F+/5.9

- The movie that taught me to love westerns - dark, racist, beautiful, and for me - Ford's and Wayne's best./A/9.6
- Scream (1996)
- Delightful original with so much wit/coolness/geekiness you may forget the over-the-top brutality./B+/8.99
- The I Inside (2003)
- Bland, boring, sad attempt period./D-/6.1
- Chosin (2010)
- Korean War conflict documentary with the US Marines battle the Chinese near their boarder./B+/8.8
- Fanny and Alexander (1982)
- Bergman's "masterpiece" - beauty, subtle, bleek, and always depressing yet for me it was way short of his best./C+/7.99
- Ghidorah: The Three Headed Monster (1964)
- Rodan, Mothra (and faires), Godzilla and a new unstoppable monster - lacks the seriousness and darkness, but for its genre - good./B-/8.0

- The Peacemaker (1997)

- The Rite of Exorcism (2011)
- Openly Catholic promotion, but it does deal with many aspects of this strange event. Not very good./D/6.4
- Jeepers Creepers (2001)
- Sarcastic, witty, bloody, and for a few scenes unsettling and maybe scary. The first 1/3 to 1/2 is much better than the last./C/7.5
- The Bourne Supremacy (2004)
- Strong middle lap of the trilogy. Great supporting cast and hi-amp energy make this a very fun ride./B+/8.99
- Seraphim Falls (2006)
- A revenge movie set in the west - rough, vicious early, becomes tedious by the end./C/7.5
- Eden log (2007)
- Tries too hard to be cryptic and mysterious - in doing this - mystery turns into total confusion. Basic elements do lead to a very strong sense of dreed and fear, yet slow pace plus very confusing presentation kill it./D/6.5

- Unusual serial killer movie - better than most./B-/8.2
- Melancholia (2011)

- Fire and Ice (1983)
- Early try at a fantasy - D&D style. A little revealing in the clothing but tame basic account of good vs. evil./C+/7.7
- Manufacted Landscapes (2007)
- A visual delight. A doco that neither praises or condemns - it just paints a picture with film and stills. The scope/scale is hard to grasp./A-/9.0

- Basic trip down there is a ghost/demon curse. OK for those who love this genre, but really same song just different time period./C-/7.0

- Adds nothing to the Zombie genre except more of them and less of us./D-/6.0
Author Comments:
Rate movies on a sn A-F scale with a point system 0-10 given to add a little more definition. I tend to stay in the B to C range, but found myself in the A's and D's more than expected in 2011. Lastly, I rate movies to similar genres - Halloween compared to Nightmare on Elm Street not Casablanca. This gives a strange occurance of a summer blockbuster with an equal grade as say a known classic - but I try hard to compare apples to apples and not apples to oranges. Highlighted movies are favorites!

On a sabbatical from movies for 2-3 months! I'm not stopping all together and still want to be a part of the "list" - just taking a few days to clear my head and renewing my interest in movies and etc. Will post to the main list when starting back!!
