Hey, I play bass, both guitar and Contrabass, and listen to a bit of a variety, mostly classic rock. I know some jazz but not near as much as I know Classic rock. Please tell me if you believe if anymore should be added.
1. Mike Rutherford during his bass days with Genesis (much better bassist than ever was a guitarist)
2. Roger Waters for his creativity
3. James Whiton for his mastery of the electric upright.
What about Chris Wolstenholme? IMO, the best bassist of this decade. Hes from the band Muse, if you dont know. listen to Hysteria or Hyper music if you dissagree with me. im not saying hes THE best, but he diserves to be up there.
I agree with alot of those people being excellant players (Give it up for Creegan, Barenaked ladies rock the badmonkey's house!) But I feel the ones I put are worthy because not only known to more people, but excell in there field.
I know I sound like a broken record, but Jim Creeggan of Barenaked Ladies, while far from the best bassist ever, is an excellent bass player. Just listen to "Pinch Me" with the bass turned up if you don't believe me.
Mike Mills of REM is very cool as well. And so is Gary Tallent, who worked with Springsteen a lot (just listen to "Born to Run" with the bass turned up). And ditto for Tom Hamilton of Aerosmith.
It is hard to vote in this poll because the bassists represent different genres of the instrument. Much the same as a guitarist poll that represented rock, jazz, blues and classical. Could the rock bassists play jazz bass and vice versa? It is a difficult question. I like Victor Wooten but I've never heard him out of the Bela Fleck context so I can't say he is better than John Paul Jones or whomever your favorite rock bassist is. By the way, where is Daryl Jones? A bit of a journeyman but a fine bassist who crosses genres effortlessly.
Charles Mingus if he counts.
Jayen Varma of India is also one of the Best Bass Players.
He plays a new genre Indian Funk Bass. http://www.jayenvarma.net

i can't believe no one knew about him!
I was waiting for him to be on the list too...:(
I am the best bass player of all time and space. Only John Paul Jones is even worthy to strap my sandals. But I don't wear sandals.

I put in my two cents for Jack Bruce.
Justin Chancellor of TOOL is far too good not to be mentioned. I have to give it to Victor Wooten as the best ever. He's brilliant!

Without Chris Squire or Geddy Lee here it'll be hard to get the best bass player right.
Let's not forget the "King of Funk" now, Bootsy Collins.
