I looked at 100's of pages of top guitarists of all time and maybe 5 even mentioned Steve Howe. I have seen many guitarists in the last 40 years live, and Steve is the best.
jimmy page has deff had the biggest impact, there is no one on this planet who hasnt heard of led zeppelin.Technically, i think yngwie malmsteen is the best and knows everything baout theory.
its so hard to name just one greatest guitar player of all time because personal preference plays so heavily. I believe really that there are 3 things that should be considered when making a list: first off, thier technical guitar talent. second of all you have to analyze their time period and their effect on music as a whole. and third you gots ta rate how good thier part in the music is as well as how well written and played their lead parts are most importantly, the solos. that being said, you have to rule out; kirt kobain and angus young, also guys like yngie malmsteen and eric johnson, although they are nasty.
so heres 15 guys to kick around. (in no particular order.)
jimmy page, jimmy hendrix, b.b. king, stevie ray vaughn, eric clapton, dimebag, kirk hammet, van halen, slash, randy rhoads, jeff beck, carlos santana, joe perry, tony ioni, robert johnson.
my personal top 3 would be jimmy page, randy rhoads, and slash

i would have to disagree with dimebagg darrel mabey he's a good riff writer for metal music but blah blah he wint that good

My vote for best guitarist of all time would be Steve Vai or Joe Satriani or maybe Yngwie Malmsteen.
I actually tend to think the best guitar player of all time was Robert Johnson, but that's just me. If you put him on there I'll vote. :?)
