Which Controversial Movie Is More Likely to Be Nominated for Best Picture? (see comments for more info)
You don't need to have seen either movie to vote in this poll, just go with your gut. Here are some facts to keep in mind (if you think there are other things that people should consider, feel free to post them in the discussion):
The Academy tends to really like incredibly high-grossing films. Both The Passion of the Christ and Fahrenheit 9/11 fit into this category. Passion is the 8th highest-grossing movie of all-time (43rd when you adjust for inflation), and Fahrenheit 9/11 was a huge smash that shattered box office records for documentaries - it grossed $120 million, about six times as much as what the previous record-holder (Bowling for Columbine) grossed.
The Academy tends to be biased towards films released towards the end of the year. Neither Passion nor Fahrenheit fit into this category. Both will have been out on DVD long before the Oscar ceremony.
The Academy tends to dislike films as brutally violent as The Passion of the Christ.
The Academy tends to like epic historical films, which might help Passion.
Michael Moore's controversial acceptance speech at the 2003 Oscars might hurt his chances of winning anything.
It is very rare to have a non-English-language film get nominated for Best Picture. It is also very rare to have a documentary get nominated for Best Picture.
The Academy, believe it or not, is largely politically liberal, even if they tend to make conservative choices about art. That might help Fahrenheit 9/11.
By the Oscars, the election will be long over, and since Fahrenheit 9/11 is a film that attempts to sway voters, it might seem irrelevant at that point. The story of Jesus, however, has lasted 1000 years.

Passion Of The Christ...and I can't possibly know why since I haven't seen it.
