What System Is Going To Sell the Best?

Tags:

Personally I do not really like PS3 or most Xbox games, it seems like all the "big" titles are first person shooters, and stuff like Fable I just get bored of. Wii has access to old games (MAJOR plus for me), ability to play GC, and despite releasing quality titles sporadically it's good ones are top of the line. I really do not like the lack of storage, and I wish they would do a lot more with online play (ESPECIALLY for the Virtal Console! Come on!!) but as a cheap system that is the one I prefer.

PS3 seems to really be struggling. LittleBigPlanet and PSHome were big ideas but did not really revitalize them. I realize that PS3 plays Blu-ray and has more processors than my computer. But, it is expensive and the quality of the games are not really affected. Blu-ray was once the next big thing but seems like a novelty today. I think Nintendo focusing their innovations on gameplay and not hardware is what is getting them so far.

I can respect that. The kind of games that the Wii has turns me off, whereas they turn you on (you know what I mean). Some people enjoy the simplicity, and it is a perfect system for those I have aforementioned.

The PS3 IS struggling, very much so. LBP is in the top 3 best games I have ever played, and the reason it did not sell well was for several reasons, but I personally think Sony should have accepted that. Anyone who has ever played it (that I have heard of) has absolutely adored the game. PS Home is absolutely ridiculous in my opinion, I fucked around with it for a bit, made a hilarious avatar. People loved it. I got bored in about 6 seconds.

Give Blu-ray time. When DVD's first came out everyone said "Well, I'm NEVER going to use that!" and look where we are today. My step dad just bought 3 Sony HD televisions and 2 blu-ray players. I don't know WHY, but I sure as fuck am not complaining (I did not even know we had the money!)

But I do agree with the "Nintendo is focusing their innovations on gameplay and not hardware..." Pleasing the masses is what Nintendo is doing, and they are doing a fabulous job.

Is that really the sentiment you remember when DVDs were introduced? I remember it being, "Those things are too expensive!", and "I don't really want to replace my tapes" - but I think everyone saw the benefit in quicker fast fowarding, no rewinding, the ability to choose scenes/special features, and easier storage. Plus they would not wear out the way VHS did. We all knew it would be the future. Blu-ray is different in that there really are no real innovations. It is higher quality, yes, but who thinks that DVDs are too poor quality? In many cases I can't really tell much difference between the DVD and Blu-ray. My prediction is that they will be like the SACDs - always available, but I don't think they'll ever be a standard.

When DVD's first released I was about 12 years old, if not younger, so I'm quite sure we have different views on the release of DVD's. Blu-ray is an innovation, but not in the sense of "VHS ---> DVD." It's not going to change the world (it may), but I DO think that it will be the future. Everything is slowly going both digital and BD. What I think is going to happen is HD televisions are going to become normal; everyone will have one. And since everyone now has the car, why not get the keys (aka get the Blu-ray player)? I don't think VHS is necessarily poor quality when comparing to when TV first came out. If your whole point is to just watch the movie and not care about amazingness, then be content with DVD, there's nothing wrong with the format it is just not the way of the future. In 10 years everything will probably be digital, and it's fairly sad imho that it isn't already.

Ocarina of Time, Super Mario Bros & MK64 ftw =)

You've said it yourself, the Wii has no competition in its market. Therefore, it's going to win. Plus you've only seen it as a family system. Japan absolutely love the Wii and whether you like it or not those established games you loathe so much like Mario, Zelda, Smash Bros will always attract people to the console.

I think games should be rated based on the gameplay and though you may think the idea of Mario to be childish, you'll see titles from that series endlessly pop up in greatest games of all time lists. Admittedly though the difficulty level of Galaxy pales in comparison to parts of older 2D Marios. There are a few exceptions in games where the storyline is epic enough to contribute as much (Bioshock) or more than (Metal Gear Solid) the gameplay. Bioshock also has merit from an art point of view, undoubtedly the most gorgeous game I've ever played. Funnily enough Metal Gear Solid to me stands as more of a trump card to PS3 than Blu-Ray. Sales increased by 14% for the PS3 in the UK the day MGS4 was released. Let's face it, Resistance: Fall Of Man is a poor copy of Gears Of War. Then there's the Halo series on the 360 which is exclusive. Other than that there aren't really any decisive games exclusive to either of the two consoles. I think they'll have split it fairly evenly in 5 years time, with the Wii out in front.

Incidently I was anti-Wii before I played it, laughing at anyone who argued with the 360's awesomeness. Now I have both and would say they are both quality consoles. I pine over Metal Gear Solid from my PS2 days though, if only for the coolest character in history...Ocelot.

I accepted about just a while ago that the Wii won this "round" or whatever you want to call it. I obviously am horrible at getting my point across. I personally do NOT like the Wii. In fact, the only game I really enjoyed playing on it was RE4 (my favorite game ever, I've spent countless hours on it). But I would have loved the game if it went onto the PSP or the DS even. IF was a miraculous save for the series, and it was fabulously done.

I wholeheartedly agree with the gameplay point that you mentioned. It should the focus of the ratings, but not the entirety. Focusing on the gameplay would be like having a really badass Mercedes engine, but not having the "over-engineering." The over-engineering is what makes a Mercedes, a Mercedes (thank GOD Chrysler is leaving them though, that was the biggest mistake in the world). I love Metal Gear Solid, but I never really got into it like everyone else. I like quick, fun, engulfing games that can be put down very quickly, but at the same time can keep me fascinated for days on end if necessary (Fallout 3, RE4, Oblivion, Heavenly Sword, God of War etc.). I like Resistance personally, and I've never played Gears. My friends keep giving me mixed reviews about it, so I just set it aside. Surprisingly, my friend who has Gears enjoys Resistance more.

The Wii is in it's own market now, and has been for well over a year. Japan loves the Wii? Of course, just like America loves Chevy and Ford.

Call me close minded on the matter, I've played the Wii, and it just isn't my cup of tea (no rhyme intended). I understand WHY people love it, and that's fine, I just view it as a POS. I'm a huge technology guy, I want the best, and only the best.

But it really is indisputable that the PS2 was (and still is viewed as) the best console that ever existed. I personally think Sony should stop producing it and force people to get the PS3, but they are making quite a sum off of that system.

Also, for anyone who has free time on his/her hands check out the 1UP podcast. It's the only podcast I listen to, and it's actually an enjoyable waste of time, just like video games.

I don't know much about consoles, but doesn't the Wii appeal to a wider audience? Its fun and the approach is novel.

I personally loathe the Wii.

It is a great family system. For the average person who doesn't know crap or take any game seriously, and just wants to fuck around every so often with family, or work out because a stay at home parent, or whatever reason like that, it's a great system. Some rules about the Wii though.

1. It is widely accepted that NO (I repeat NO) "hardcore gamer" will take the Wii seriously. It's laughed at. I remember once this total geek (and I mean stereotypical geek) laughed so hard at this guy when he said he had a Wii and it was badass that the entire class laughed at him. That's a bad sign.
2. It's extremely cheap. You drop that thing more than once in the wrong place, and you are fucked.

It's gotten to the point where Nintendo is saying that they don't even consider the Wii to be in the market with the PS3 and 360. It's in it's own market.

The Wii has one processor. One. That technology has been around since the 60s. The 360 has 4 processors, and it also frequently gets the "red ring of death." Better technology? Yes. But windows makes it, so it has to break down. That's the law. The PS3 has 8 processors. Your fuckin' computer doesn't have the much power. I own the original 60 gig PS3, the best one. Sony has downgraded it since the beginning to make it cheaper so the motherfucking poor people can afford it. Nobody can argue it's not the best system, because it is. Period. But it's almost too good for most people in today's economy.

Anyway, enough of the rant. Overall, the Wii is fun, but to be blunt, ridiculously stupid. I know people that own the Wii, and it's one of those "I'm sooo bored I'll play the Wii" or they are just a really young (which is fine, it's fantastic for young people) and don't know any better.

Wii = soccer moms and kids 6-12. After that, your called a "pussy" for owning one.

Rant! I think you're a bit biased against the Wii to be honest.

A friend of mine who has the 360 and the Wii said there aren't that many good games for the Wii. So, yeah, I ended up playing the 360 but I still feel the Wii is very innovative. It isn't really aimed at hardcore gamers so I guess they won't take it seriously. I won't generalise Wii owners like that. Imo if and when it gets some really good games, if could give the other consoles good competition.

I am not a hardcore gamer, but I take my money seriously. I am not going to spend it on something that is neat and cool, I am going to spend it on something badass and amazing. The Wii is fun for family and for light parties, though when the competition arises LittleBigPlanet wins against the Wii whenever I bring my PS3 - every time.

The Wii is in it's own market now. Nintendo doesn't even bother bringing the 360 or the PS3 into the battle, they've already won. Now it's just a ridiculous fight over "360 or PS3."

Games are a fun, enjoyable, relaxing waste of time. Some suck you in, others like flOwer are made for coming home from a stressful day and just relaxing. You control the "flow" by using sixaxis (aka you move the controller, not using the analog sticks). Everyone has their personal happy place.

Fair enough, everyone has their own preference.

I'm sorry but that's all nonsense. Your knowledge of video games is clearly a bit shakey (and sorry if I come off condescending here but meh).

1. Do 'hardcore gamers' take the ps2 seriously? it sold more than five times more than the Wii, so I'd say in fact it's more populist...

2. I play quite a few games, I own a 360 and a Wii, the latter is much better in some areas - free internet access, mario (cmon, HARDCORE GAMERS have nothing without Miyamoto's ideas) kart and galaxy, fun motion sensers. That said, the former has some great games and features too. It's aimed more at adults, but not necessarily for hardcore gamers. True gamers who love things like FPS play it on a pc, they see consoles as noob machines.

3. Are you aware how much of an innovation the Wii is for the mainstream market? Using standard controllers with essentially better engines is all the 360 and Ps3 do, so they're not exactly anything new.

4. 'Wii = soccer moms and kids 6-12. After that, your called a "pussy" for owning one.' Ridiculous generalisation and my respect for you lowers due to it. I'm sorry but you're just making an argument with no real basis.

1. The PS2 is widely accepted as the best system ever to come into existence. Also, the Wii sold more over the Holiday than the PS2, so I don't know where you are getting your information from.

2. Maybe you did not read my first line. "I loathe the Wii." That's pretty direct, and extremely biased, I am not going to claim it's not. I have played the Wii, and have made a Mii, or whatever it's called, but I do NOT take that system seriously at all. It is a total matter of opinion, and I personally view the "smash bros" games, and thousands of other Wii titles to be totally stupid. Out of all of my friends that own a Wii, they claim to have bought it for one of two reasons (or both).

a. Nintendo fan boy (I'm a Sony fan boy, not going to claim otherwise)
b. Family system.

3. "Innovation." I can understand that point of view. I dislike the "innovation" after trying it out. I enjoy the 'classic' dualshock 3 sixaxis Sony controller. In fact, I love them. I also enjoy the 360's controller, though not as much. The bulkiness annoys me a tad. The Wii controller I do not like. I kept an open mind about it until I played around with it. Now, in my opinion, the system is total crap and the games that come with it do not fit in what I view as "entertaining."

4. My "generalization" is a generalization made by millions of people, I only added the "pussy" from my own personal experience. I'm sorry you don't respect me as much, but --

"Frankly my dear, I don't give a damn."

I am a HUGE Sony fan, they don't fuck their shit up like Microsoft (ALL of my friends have gotten the red ring of death), and when they make an "innovation" they make Blu-ray, a monstrous system more powerful than most modern computers, and a damn good lineup of games (and new ones games, not just remakes etc.). Not a controller with "....oh now BRAWL is coming out!, and look! there is a new Zelda too!" OHMIGOSH - BUG ISLAND!

I just don't take those games seriously (nor the system, since the games represent the system), and yes, it is a matter of opinion, just like everything else that has to do with games. I never claimed otherwise, and if I did, I did not intend to.

The only 'fact' there is in console systems is "which console was/is built the best, and with the newest technology." After that, everything is opinion.

Just to make things clear, I loathe the Wii, I enjoy the 360, and I fuckin' love the PS3. Enjoy your Wii, I have nothing against you, just the system.

And if you want to claim that computers are better, that's fine, but don't dig yourself in a hole by then claiming that all consoles are crap compared to them. You just shot yourself in the foot there my friend ;].

"Just because you don't like the car a person drives, doesn't mean you shouldn't like the driver."

The ps2 sold 160 million units, WAY more than the Wii. Do your research.

And if you want to claim that computers are better, that's fine, but don't dig yourself in a hole by then claiming that all consoles are crap compared to them. You just shot yourself in the foot there my friend ;].

I never said that, I said some did. Learn to read things properly before you put arrogant smileys Mkay

Eurgh. I regret that. One minute over when I can edit.

I am sorry, I don't mean to sound so spiteful and full of contempt because I've genuinely enjoyed other contributions you've made. I hope we can just leave it at that and agree to disagree :)

Nobody is perfect, and everybody makes mistakes (I just discovered how to say the same thing twice!). I too have thoroughly enjoyed other contributions you have made, and I would love to agree to disagree. I meant no personal harm/foul to you whatsoever, so I too apologize if I said something against you. No offense was taken from my end, but apology accepted.

"1. The PS2 is widely accepted as the best system ever to come into existence."

IYHO. I personally prefer The Game Boy Color. Who could of thought you can get so much fun in such a small object. Although I may be a bit biased as I am a definite Pokemon hag...

2. Maybe you did not read my first line. "I loathe the Wii." That's pretty direct, and extremely biased, I am not going to claim it's not. I have played the Wii, and have made a Mii, or whatever it's called, but I do NOT take that system seriously at all. b. Family system.

I personaly think the Wii is great. It's fun, it's original and it's just a laugh. People take gaming too seriously. Look in the name: "GAME". It's meant to be fun, it's meant to be a laugh. It's meant to be something you do with your mates and then get stoned after and reminisce about the great days you had with Mario and Luigi. And that's what the Wii does.

Your right, innovation doesn't always mean it's going to be good, Look at the Gi-Wizz. However just because it doesn't fit into your view as "entertaining" doesn't meant that other people dislike it. For example, entertainment to me is melting 4 Kit-Kat chunkys together into one big bar and eating it while pretending I'm a pixie. (© Bill Bailey) However not everyone would view that as entertainment, but that doesn't take away the fact that it's entertaining to me.

4. My "generalization" is a generalization made by millions of people, I only added the "pussy" from my own personal experience. I'm sorry you don't respect me as much, but --

And as far as I'm aware, millions of people still think that there is one moon, however it doesn't mean that their opinion is correct.

"Frankly my dear, I don't give a damn."

"I may be drunk, Miss, but in the morning I will be sober and you will still be ugly. "

"Just because you don't like the car a person drives, doesn't mean you shouldn't like the driver."

But if the driver of the car says that anyone who doesn't drive that car and drives a different car is a pussy, then I think neptune has the right to dislike the driver.

Once again, video games are all just matters of opinion.

But seriously, enjoy your Wii, we all know my opinion of Wii's they have not changed, nor will they, but if it makes you happy then by all means have fun.

*Sorry for the short reply, I wasn't expecting long posts and I have finals in two weeks.

Dude, chill out with statements like "my respect for you lowers due to it." People can have opinions you find misguided or generalized, but that's not a reason to not respect them.

It does. No other way to put it, I'm sorry if you don't like that. Making sweeping generalisations is not a way to curry my favour to be honest, especially when I'm grouped in them. =)

Well... spinmedown16 has made one sweeping generalization, and you've pigeonholed him as a person who makes sweeping generalizations, so really, aren't you generalizing too?

People have characteristics, they don't just do things once.

Sorry, once again this is a few minutes late from when I can edit it. I regret making the above comments, and although I still feel annoyed at Spinmedown's comments, I would like to apologise for my comments. I hope that you too AJ, will not be offended by my reply directly above, I apologise for that too.

I strongly believe that the PS3 will one for one very important factor. Blu-ray. That by itself may just push it out into the lead and cause it to win the "console war." And yes, I know that the Xbox 360 is getting the blu-ray drive externally, but in the long run...that's just going to be the cost of the PS3 itself.
