go ahead, be selfish--if you could choose to hear more good music from any one of these, who would it be?
as a side note: i purposely didn't include folks like elvis who i felt had lived a full and complete life... with that said, feel free to comment on people you think deserved to make the list--i look forward to the discussions!

Mozart dammit

Where's Jim Morrison???
We tried John.
Patsy Cline, Mama Cass, Janis Jopilin...there were some foreward thinking women who's careers were cut short.
I believe that John Lennon is the best choice primarily because he was taken by someone else. We can't say the same for Cobain for example.
point taken re: lennon, but the second part totally depends on your opinion of ms. love. have you seen the documentary "kurt & courtney"? i'm not saying it points to her definitively but it sure is an eye-opening watch--highly recommended.
I have not seen the documentary but I have heard that it makes a pretty good argument. I have a lot of sympathy for Jim Morrison, Kurt Cobain, Layne Staley, etc. But I also have a visceral feeling that Lennon's murder was the one of the most senseless and brutal acts in music history, if not beyond.
My vote is for Freddie Mercury! Queen could have made so many more albums. He really had a lot to say, and was a beautiful soul as well as an amazing singer/song-writer.
oh yea, would you consider Ian Curtis of Joy Division a candidate for this poll?
oh i do wish i'd thought of him before. i hesitate to add him now though, because it might skew the results--making it unfair for those who already cast their votes. good call, though! i'll surely consult you on other polls. :)
I voted for Kurt Cobain, not because his contributions were necessarily the MOST important, but because they touched me the most. (selfish, i know.) The only nam i would add to the list would be Jim Morrison. All in all, this is a great poll! c-ya.
My vote goes to Holly simply for the contributions he made to modern music. Then would be Lennon, then Hendrix, then Cobain, and the rest I consider fillers(not taking anything away from their respective genius). But as far as changing, innovating, and contributing to modern Rock-n-Roll, the Texan from Lubbock gets my vote. Cheers!
Anybody heard of Randy Rhoades?
Anybody haven't heard of him?
Although, in all honesty, he really wouldn't come near the top of my list. Different folks, different strokes.

Dave Beethoven!
no one (besides me) think's it would be interesting to have Beethoven (or even Mozart) alive today?
What band did he play in?
Shalom, y'all!
L. Bangs (who, yes, is joking)
he was in the Dave Beethoven Five!
Sam Cooke, Otis Redding, Jim Morrison
Sam Cooke would seem to me an excellent addition, as would Otis Redding. Both scored posthumous hits from material recorded shortly before their deaths (A Change Is Gonna Come, Sittin' At the Dock of the Bay). Otis especially seemed to be on the verge of creating an interesting hybrid of soul and folk music, which I really wish he could've fulfilled. Still quite vital at their hour of death, in my book.

Definitely Jim Morrison, if he is in fact dead.
yeah, i *thought* about adding him to the list but i think some people might say he had exhausted his brilliance--and that, like elvis, he should've faded out sooner. (i'm not saying *i* feel that way, but i was going for the "died before getting to the best stuff" kind of phenom.)
Jim Morrison needs to be on here as well as Janis Joplin. That ay I can struggle on who to vote for.Help a brother out Taryn.
Duke Ellington
I would add Stevie Ray Vaughan, but I think I'd still vote for John Lennon.
Buddy Holly is THE king of rock and roll. he invented it all and tragically was with us for such a short time, we only were able to experiance a small part of his genius. Long Live the King!
hehe, I voted for Buddy Holly myself.
As a complete sidenote, has anyone ever seen "Six String Samurai"? It's probably the only entrant ever in the "Kung Fu/Rockabilly/Post-Apocalyptic/Quest" genre... I'm serious. But the Interesting Thing is, its main character is sort of a very Buddy Holly-esque character... I can't even explain it well here... try the imdb for a little more concrete info.
Antihero
Qui custodet ipso custodes?
Buddy Holly in a bad mood...
Of course, if I was living in a post-apocalyptic nightmare, I probably would be a bit less chipper myself.
Shalom, y'all!
