Vote Your Favorite Bronte Novel

As usual, tell us why you so chose

I voted for Wuthering Heights, but the truth is that depending on the day, I might have voted for The Tenant of Wildfell Hall. Both are tense nightmares almost entirely determined by the actions of their wrongheaded characters rather than by circumstances or nature (biggest difference from Hardy, the other Victorian novelist of nightmares). Tenant, though, while also driven by characters with a proclivity for tragedy, has a broader, healthier vision of life. WH is smothering; you can breathe in TWH.

And now I’ve gone and talked myself out of my WH vote.

Who chose Villette? I remember being surprised by how much I liked it.
