Dracula! The only real contestants are it and Frank. Although Frankenstein was the original horror novel, Bram Stoker really refined the genre and made the absolute perfect example. Everything else on the list is too modern; horror needs the superstitions and mystery of the past to work.

Frankenstein is simply one of the best novels ever written, so it easily gets my vote. So many layers of interpretation. How about adding The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym, by Poe, also a favorite, and perhaps At the Mountains of Madness, by Lovecraft?

I voted for Frankenstein.
However, The Picture of Dorian Gray is, for me, possibly THE greatest novel ever written, but I never really think of it as a horror novel, although I know it was made into a horror film (in 1945 starring George Sanders).

I agree with that "The Picture Of Dorian Gray", while being one of the greatest novels ever written, is hardly a horror novel.
