I did this same poll about a year ago but it started off less comprehensive and by the time I gave in and changed it to include over 50 entries, many had already voted and were possibly disappointed they didn't get the opportunity to vote for what they really wanted. This is basically my personal Top 50 albums in alphabetical order, so further inclusions are unlikely. However, if you really, really need me to include another album and you just can't stand it not being on here, yell at me, swear in all capitols or say something enchantingly brilliant to get me to see your viewpoint and I may just give in.

I think appetite for destruction ort to be in there. im tellin you from start to finish g&r rock!
Wheres Led zeppelin 4 hello thats the best album ever
I gave Sgt.Pepper's a vote. I don't think it deserves to be behind revolver. Because of the amount of time and inventory put into this album. It never seem's to be the people's favorite album. But I think its very deserving of the greatest album ever!
Wow! Revolver came out of nowhere. Great choice!
As of today, it is a tie between What's Going On and Revolver with Pet Sounds behind by a vote. Great picks!
Where is U2 The Joshua Tree
Not on the list because it's not good enough. But that's just me. If you think it is, right on. It's certainly a very good album.
i'm surprised that there isn't any Neil Young album in this list. i mean... ever listent to harvest? or after the gold rush? or comes a time? or tonights the night?
But it's a great list, i don't know all the albums. I havent got any Jimi Hendrix yet (shame on me!!)
I vote pet sounds, but it's impossible to pick one favourite album ever. I also could vote for astral weeks, or joni mitchells' blue or blond on blond, or the velvet undrgroudn & nico, or rubber soul. or... and so on.
1 question, what are kraftwerk and public enemy doing in a list like this??
it takes a nation of millions just happens to be one of, if not THE best hip hop album ever recorded...hit the late 80's generation like a bag of bricks and still sounds way better than a lot of the trash on the radio (ya hear me Nelly, P. Diddy, and the rest of you mindless bastards!?!)...and it's not my fave on the list...that went to Brother Marvin...
peace
yes, yes, yes...What's Going On is THE 70's masterpiece. It deserves to be spoken of in hushed tones like some sort of rare diamond.
The amazing thing about it is how much more relevant it sounds with the passing of time.
Thanks for the response.
The ONLY reason Neil Young isn't on the list is I decided to limit the picks to 50 and that cut him short a bit. If it were 60, then Tonight's the Night would've definitely made it. 75: Add in After the Goldrish and Harvest as well.
Trans Europe Express is the best "techno/electronica" album ever made. "It Takes A Nation..." is the best rap album. I happen to enjoy all music styles (some much more than others, but all of them nonetheless.) Both of these albums are masterpieces and absolutely deserve to be in the top 50, even if they're unlikely to get picked as the greatest album ever made.
we're lucky that music taste is personal, in my case i think neil young should have 3 albums in my top 50...
About other music styles, a few years ago i listen to a lopt of hip hop, and also r&b music... My favourite hip hop album is from bone thugs n harmony, creepin on a come up. Great great raps. they have a really good own style.
And techno, it isn't really my kind of music, but it doesn't matter off course, everybody his own.
You're absolutely right. Music criticism, picks, "greatest of all time"-you name it-it's all an opinion. Neil Young is a fantastic artist. Tonight's the Night holds a special place in my heart for actually being the first "classic" album I purchased. I'd never heard it before, and one day I just decided to buy it-it just seemed like it would be great and I'd heard it was supposed to be one of Young's best. Over the years it has remained one of my favorite albums. My favorite songs are probably "Albaquerque" and "Tonight's the Night". It is undeniably among the most stirring performances in all of rock. I'm not sure but I think it was mostly recorded live, or without second takes. It sure sounds like it (which is a plus point!) That it barely missed my top 50 doesn't mean it's not one of the greatest albums ever made. It's simply the misfortune of me assigning an arbitrary number-I had to stop somewhere-50 happens to be a good number. 75 seemed excessive and 100 would get ridiculous for a poll. It already takes long enough to scroll through this thing. In any case, I can't really argue with you that all 3 of his best deserve to be in a top 50. The difference in quality between the picks that made it in and those albums is very miniscule. There just happens to be 50 or so albums I find slightly better-that's all. As for Bone Thugs n' Harmony, they're pretty darn good also. Thanks for your comments. Feel free to make as many as you wish. Thanks for your votes too, keep 'em coming!
Day 1:
Right On! It's great to see Kind Of Blue voted for--surprising, but very well deserved. It's amazing to me that this album isn't consistently voted into the top 10 of most critics' greatest albums of all time lists. Also, Highway 61 is an excellent choice-Like A Rolling Stone could be the best song ever written. And there's no doubt that, as an album, Highway 61 remains unmatched lyrically.
Ziggy Stardust is a great pick. It has so many great songs, not to mention the amazing guitar work in that album.
Thank God Astral Weeks got a vote! Thank you to whoever sees this as the greatest album ever made! It is quite difficult to disagree.
I can't possibly say enough about the total genius of this unbelievable album.
Also, "Blood On the Tracks" is a great choice. I have a feeling that's Mr. Bangs' vote. I strongly suggest anyone who hasn't taken a look at LBangs greatest top 100 albums list does so ASAP. With his review of "Blood On The Tracks" he actually managed to reinvigorate me to its' peculiar genius, and it soonafter shot up my own list as one of my favorite albums ever. Prior to that it would probably have been ranked around #35 or so. Now it rightfully sits comfortably in my top 15. There's just something beautifully simple and sad about it. It is Dylan's most literal album and his most tightly melodic. If you've somehow missed it, give it a listen, and keep listening to it until you've really 'got' it. This feeling is usually marked by learning to totally appreciate "Idiot Wind" and especially "Lily, Rosemary and The Jack Of Hearts"....
"Be careful not to touch the wall, there's a brand new coate of paint. I'm glad to see you're still alive, you're lookin' like a saint!"
I love that line...
Wow, I'm thrilled Blood on the Tracks has grown on you. I also love that line from Lily.
That wasn't my vote, as you now know, but the new one is!
Great poll!
Shalom, y'all!
L. Bangs
It's good to see your vote!
Although I don't consider Blood On The Tracks THE greatest album ever, it's definately not far off, and it's kind of fun to see the underdog take the lead anyway.
Thanks for your two cents!
Have you checked out Forever Changes by Love, What's Going On by Marvin Gaye and Innervisions by Stevie Wonder yet?
Good to see What's Going On and Exile getting a vote each. These are very worthy picks. The murkiness and beautiful-ugliness of Main Street is undeniable while the soaring, God-like intensity of What's Going On remains an astonishing testament to outstanding production values and wonderfully sympathetic vocals.
I'm a bit surprised that Forever Changes by Love, Revolver by The Beatles and The Stone Roses each don't have a vote yet.
I have to say though-I'm impressed by what has been voted for.
Keep 'em coming!
Actually, that was my vote. Although, I must confess that I could have just as easily voted for almost any of these albums without any hesitation.
Great vote then! Maybe LBangs will get around to it later (or not) to help his all time fave take the lead.
Thank you for the compliment there. Sometimes I have to pinch myself because I own most of these albums (I would own all of them, but about a year ago, 50 of my albums got stolen, uggh...)
In any case, it can be very difficult to pick what to listen to each day. My current fetish is "Live At The Apollo, Vol. 1-James Brown". I can't get over the performance of "Lost Someone" and the sensual insanity of the crowd, especially when he goes straight in to "PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE!" and on into the infamous medley. An unbelieveable performance and those 17 minutes are perhaps the most exciting music ever recorded!
Thanks for your votes!
Jack Of Hearts is one of my favourites. My favourite line: 'Lily had already taken all of the dye out of her hair' (great delivery).
So true, so true...and to think, I didn't like "Jack of Hearts" much when I first got the album, or even when I'd listened to it about 10 times or so. It wasn't until I actually listened to the words and realized in astonishment how brilliantly compressed Dylan's songwriting is here, that I truly began to love it. After that, "Blood On The Tracks" became a masterwork and something very close to perfection for me. I'm just glad I'm so ridiculously patient with albums, especially the one's I've heard are supposed to be great.
