I saw an old interview with freddie mercury on tv, in regards to bohemian rhapsody. He said that when people asked him what the song was about, he honestly didn't know. He couldn't explain it. Some of the best songs out there make little to no sense. You could take from it what you want I suppose.
a few more suggestions definitely worth a listen: i am the resurrection by the stone roses, quicksand by david bowie, human nature by michael jackson, estranged by G&R, a man needs a maid by neil young, you set the scene by love, whispering pines by the band
I don't think I could ever come up with five favorite songs of all time. But here are five that are definitely up there for me, and pretty popular / acclaimed as well, so they might be appropriate for this poll:
Baba O'Riley - The Who
Born to Run - Bruce Springsteen
Hey Jude - The Beatles
Nightswimming - REM
There Is a Light That Never Goes Out - The Smiths
I'm absolutely amazed that you had one of my picks on here (specifically Born Slippy).
Excellent, excellent, EXCELLENT job!
My other 4 favorite songs:
Energy 52 - Cafe Del Mar
The Age of Love - Age of Love (this song created an entire new genre of music)
The Future Sound of London - Papua New Guinea
Sasha - Xpander
"When a Man Loves a Woman" by Percy Sledge. Only because I've heard it a thousand times and it still holds up. You may have to be at least over 30 to enjoy it.
Bjork - All Is Full Of Love
Aphex Twin - Windowlicker
Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah
Deerhoof - Apple Bomb
Raunchy - I Get What I See
Muse - Time Is Running Out
Fear Factory - Archetype
Dream Theater - Endless Sacrifice
Out of the choices on there? Heroin by The Velvet Underground.
But the best song (excluding classical) is Miss Fortune by Faust.

Yeah, I voted for "A Day in the Life" too.
Now THAT is a good song.
"All Tomorrow's Parties" isn't even the best song on it's album.
I'm with you (though, to be fair, Heroin is also on this poll). Is this a personal favorite of yours, pherber?
Yeah, because I love Nico's voice so much. People say thet she's always off key, etc., but I could listen to her sing for hours.
"Pale Blues Eyes" by The Velvet Underground as well as "Visions of Johanna" by Bob Dylan.
I have the CD with Pale Blue Eyes on it....
