Stewart's rendering of "Scottie" Ferguson in Vertigo is possibly his greatest--as far as his serious portrayals go. In that respect, however, one can't fairly determine which work was his greatest, as he was equally brilliant in highly variegated genres.
Could you add his Jeff Webster from The Far Country? That would be the one I'd vote for. I don't remember the year, but it's early fifties...
