Berie, I would go with Strangelove/Failsafe but Failsafe isn't strong enough to hold its side of the bargain. I voted for Private Ryan/Red Line...Together they are stronger than any pair.
Almost any movie must pale when coupled with a masterpiece like DR STRANGELOVE, but, still, I think you are underrating FAILSAFE. However, I can take your point about SPR and TRL, they make a powerful pair.
On the subject of war movies, one of the most affecting experiences I've had with a war movie was when I watched OH WHAT A LOVELY WAR! Have you seen it? It's a musical about WW1. Put that way, it sounds like a case of very bad taste, but surprisingly it works as a profoundly moving work of anti-war art. All the music is popular songs of that time, some very funny and some tragic, and some both funny and tragic. It would go well with Kubrick's PATHS OF GLORY, I think.
What is Shriek?
SHRIEK! a.k.a. SHRIEK IF YOU KNOW WHAT I DID LAST FRIDAY THE 13TH.
I went with that and Scary movie.
Wow. There isn't a single pair of those that I've read both movies from!
